Latest eye-rolling Freecycle request:
CEDAR CHEST WANTED - Looking for a great to excellent condition cedar (hope) chest being given away. I need one for at the end of my bed. Preferrably with padded seating on top of lid.
Please let me know.

I added the emphasis because I'm amazed at the audacity of some people - asking for one in great to excellent condition, with a padded lid no less! I'm going to have to quit reading my local freecycle - I see more and more of these "gimme gimme" requests, and it really gets on my nerves!

1. On today's list here (cut and pasted, emphasis added):
WANTED: DESPARTLEY NEED COMPUTER!

MY SON'S COMPUTER CRASHED LAST NIGHT AND GIVE UP TRYING TO FIX IT. DOES ANYONE HAVE A COMPUTER THAT WOULD BE GOOD FOR MY SON TO PLAY HIS GAMES ON?

:eyes:

My list is good for getting rid of stuff (because there's a taker out there for EVERYTHING -- we got rid of a c. 1991, 2400-baud modem on Freecycle)...and for baby/toddler items, but that's about it.

2. Yup!
The ones that make me shake my head are the ones looking for PS2s, XBox and other high end games systems, and yeah, anything in "excellent" or "new" condition.

At one point, I think I found the ones looking for fridges, washers and dryers even worse, until I did some research and found that the city trash collectors charge a significant amount to haul away large appliances, so getting rid of these items through freecycle benefitted a lot of people instead.

The ones that break my heart are the pet ones--finding people who are giving away their pets with little todo about it at all--I would rather lose my right arm than ever give away one of my family like that. Especially the ones who dump the cat because they're expecting--the superstitions about cats and babies just doesn't wash anymore, unless you are deliberately ignoring the truth about such things.

11. Thanks for that link!
I will send PMs to those who are trying to find homes for them. I did ask the moderator about putting a link up for Craigslist and the regular Petfinder list, but he said they can't do it because sometimes on those lists people charge, and in order to keep their nonprofit status, all links and such need to be totally and completely free. *shrug* I just want to cry when I see so many, cats especially, being tossed around like they were impersonal objects. If I could, I would take a couple more in, but my friend who owns the house told me no more until I can handle the 4 I already have.

6. I like to tell them I have one...
that I'm giving away...then give them bad directions to Putnam, CT...2 hours away...and tell them they have to pick it up.

It's not mean, they're the ones $hi++ting up my freecycle...f$%king freeloaders.

7. For ours we have to live in this county to
be on the list. And this is still a smaller county where everyone knows everyone or knows someone that knows everyone.

I know people who have joined the list just to see what certain freeloaders are begging for.

8. There was a woman on my local list
who asked for free cat and dog food about once a month. She managed to ask for just about everything else as well. I think the community (if she got what she asked for) completely furnished her entire house and totally fed her animals. Thankfully, she has moved out of the area and will subscribe to some other area list. I found her really annoying.

As for asking for washers and dryers, or even cedar chests, I see nothing wrong with that. Specifying the padded seat is a bit over the top. Asking for something in good condition is not over the top. This is a recycling program, not a dump-your-trash-on-somebody-else program. Personally, I never list anything that is not in good condition.

I frequently see offers that "need just a little bit of work," or "need to be reupholstered." Well, if you don't want to do it, what makes you think I do?

9. A lot of people would want to do the work
I got a very nice dresser through freecycle that needed some work - one of the drawers was wobbly, it needed new handles and needed refinishing. The person who owned it didn't want to bother - I was happy to and cleaned up and fixed, it's a handsome piece of furniture.

The old "one person's junk is another person's treasure" is still true - that's why yard sales are still popular.

10. lol
there's one sitting right behind me that I would gladly give away in a heart beat. If it were legally mine, which it is, but that is a whole other stinkin can of worms. Nice to know what I can do with it when the time comes, put it in freecycle and say first come first served.
