mattress recommendations
I think I'm going to be buying a new mattress in the next couple of weeks.

I don't know anything about mattresses.

I don't really want to spend more than $800 (mattress only, my boxspring is fine).

I want something reasonably firm (for support) but I don't want to feel like I'm sleeping on a plank.

Anyone?

1. I just bought one
at Bob's Discount, it was a little more than that but it was the high-end model. There are cheaper options. (Actually, i bought 3 entire bedroom sets but only one mattress) You have Bob's up on the north side of the CT border, no? Sales guy was great..The beds were damaged twice by shoddy movers though, never had a problem getting replacements, no questions asked. Sales guys, to my knowledge are not paid on commission so, they won't try to sell you more than you need.

3. yes, in fact there's a Bob's very close by
it helps to know that the salespeople aren't paid by commission.

2. we love our "Sleep Comfort" bed (air bed) you don't need a boxspring
but you will need a platform for it to rest on. If you don't get the digital read out pump controller (just get the rocker switch) it will be in your budget probably

and it's never recommended to use an old box spring with a new mattress

good luck!

4. of course it's not recommended
someone might not make any money off a new boxspring if I don't buy a new one!

8. I just bought one myself.
Had it for a week now, so I'm not a long term user, however...

Simmons Beautyrest Eurotop (like a pillowtop, only better).

My great dane loves it, too.

9. Dicker for the price.
Mr. Gray worked for a mattress store for awhile. All matresses are 30-50% markup. If they tell you that's not true, they are lying.

You can get a mattress priced at $800 for $500 if you push hard enough. Just tell them you can get it cheaper somewhere else.

The, when you do buy one and they are going to deliver, make sure yours is the first one deliverd in the morning before they start picking up the used ones that are loaded with bedbugs...no kidding...the east coast is having a serious problem with bugs.

10. Look at a latex foam mattress
They come in varying degrees of firmness. These are similar in feel to the memory foam mattresses like Tempur-Pedic, but they don't leave impressions:
