What TV series on DVD should I watch next?
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 04:51 PM by Stevendsmith
My wife and I just finished "Lost" seasons 1 and 2. We're going to wait for season 3 on DVD because we hate commercials and like to watch on our own time.

Coworkers have suggested "Grey's Anatomy" and "24" as good choices. Any others?

I should add that the wife isn't a big sci-fi fan. We both enjoy great drama (who doesn't?)

5. The Shield and The Office
It is astonishing that "The Shield" is never nominated for Emmys. It is an incredibly powerful show--graphic, for sure--but solid, well-acted and unforgettable. Great writing, acting, directing. Has it all. Watch season one and you'll be hooked. In fact, just the first episode will hook you.

"The Office"(American version with Steve Carill) is lighter fare, of course but very funny. Season one is only about 6 episodes but terriffic.

Enjoy. :-)

It's also on DVD. And as I learned on my trip to England last year, there really is a town called Slough, and it's as ugly as portrayed on the series.

10. "24" and "The Wire."
Both very different shows -- 24 grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go, particularly in later seasons.

The Wire, which I have just started watching, slowly draws you in. It's a cop show, in a sense, but it's much more than that at the same time -- very involving and detailed, much like a novel.

11. Depends on what you watch
most of the time.

I'm a science fiction fan, so a lot of my favorites fall into that category. 24 would be good to watch as a DVD show because each episode is connected to the one before it and the one after it, so watching them all together without commercials should make it an easier watch.

I would suggest, perhaps, The Dead Zone, which just ended its 5th season, and the DVD sets are rich with additional materials, including behind the scenes, commentary, and lots of other extras. The DVDs go to the end of the 4th season right now, but I'm sure that the 5th season will be out soon enough.

Perhaps I can also suggest another favorite of mine, MacGyver. There are 7 seasons altogether, and they're all available on DVD now.

If you are into comedy, perhaps something along the line of a favored Brit-com might do the trick? Keeping Up Appearances, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers or As Time Goes By would work for you.

44. A big k&r for "Arrested Development"
Think "The Simpsons" with real live actors. The hits come fast and furious, so be sure to rewind and rewatch. On my second time through the series, I went to wikipedia.org, which has excellent plot summaries and points out the gags and recuring jokes. Most helpful. I was disappointed that it was cancelled, but the 54 surviving episodes make a nice complete whole.

And besides, near the end of season 3, Jessica Walters ("Lucille Bluth") tells the dirtiest joke ever aired on television.

I have the entire series on my iPod - it's really that good!

I'm a Superman fan, and I got all 5 seasons of Smallville on dvd...season 6 ends in May sometime. I also got Season 1 of Xfiles(very good, can't find season 2 yet). My wife is a Little House on the Prarie fan, and she has all 9 seasons. I also got all of the Justice League(unlimited) seasons, except season 3, of JLU.

The next set of seasons I want is Star Trek the OE, while my wife is leaning towards the Simpsons/CSI Las Vegas.

I own all of the currently available DVDs - it's well worth it. Atlantis is a better show, but without the backstory from the first 8 seasons of SG1, it won't make any sense.

Best. Shows. Ever.

(Edited to add: Sorry, just saw that "doesn't like scifi" thing. FYI though, I didn't either, and I love both shows. Not into any other scifi either.)

50. Rome
Season 1 is out on DVD and season 2 is airing now, so you shouldn't have too long of a wait to watch it on DVD. There will only be two seasons.

If you haven't seen it yet, Oz was a great drama. It's sometimes intensely violent though, if that's an issue definitely don't watch it. (For that matter, Rome has very violent moments, so if that's an issue, steer clear of both my picks.)

56. Dexter (Showtime) or Rome (HBO)
Dexter is about a serial killer that only kills serial killers, as he attempts to blend in with society.

Rome is a melodrama about ancient Rome, which has grown incredibly soapish this season. However, the first season was good.

Also - you can watch the full seasons of Lost and Ugly Betty (both great shows) on ABC.com. Heroes is on NBC.com.

DVD's of Season One are due to be released on Tuesday (Feb. 13). This old CBS romantic drama series ran between 1987 - 1990. The show's depicted community Below is probably one of the better examples of liberal-progressive themed stories I've seen on TV. That and the doomed love story between Catherine and Vincent is a great romance for Valentine's Day viewing...
