So I was in GD for a few minutes, and I have to ask this:
Since it's all going to shit anyway, should I just go out, get a new credit card, and buy the camera and equipment I've been thinking about? We're all going to die anyway, or be homeless, or become soldiers, and any education we get is going to be worthless, so what the fuck - let's just party?

Or should I see if there's anybody in a bar who wants to fuck me raw until I get a disease I'll be more than happy to die from?

x(

As my counselor would say, "live in the present" - meaning not to think about the hyperbole of the future too much, and I know Mastercard has its own definition of that same phrase too...

1. Make yourself happy
regardless of what's going on in GD. As a matter of fact, staying happy might include staying OUT of GD. :D

Seriously, though, get the gear. You'll thank yourself later.

2. I'm going to keep my promise to myself re: when I buy it...
I'm not going to get into the same trap again and right now saying "No" is what I need to do.

Maybe in time.

When I'm more convinced I won't misuse cards...

And my counselor agreed it IS a relevant and not frivolous purchase, given the field I am going into (graphic and ad design), and it is also true that when the day is done, the best equipment makes the best pictures. The telefoto nature of D-SLRs is mandatory, and the net cost is still 50% lower as I'm staying with Minolta, the brand that makes my current lenses and other equipment.

But I do need to be responsible.

9. Fair enough
The fact that you recognize that is a pretty big deal. I've spent a lot of money in the past on gear for the s.o. that ended up being underused or not used at all, and since I always buy high end, well, the math is not happy.

So I'll alter my answer to the following: make yourself happy and get the gear when the time is right and you won't jeopardize your financial situation by getting the very fine gear your field mandates and your level of expertise requires and justifies.

You should probably still stay out of GD, though. :pals:

19. Good for you, HypnoToad
I was worried for you when I read the beginning of the thread. After all you went through to get out of debt I am glad to realize you weren't serious.

20. Hate to say it, but I was serious.
That's the danger.

I've worked hard but if the world is going to fry, why THE frig should I care?

Even mum and dad, who seem supportive of something one day are doing a 180 the next. And they're not remembering e-mails I've sent, so why should I keep them informed of anything anymore? Either way, and I know they love me, nothing's ever good enough or they claim I never told them!

I'm tired.

3. It's like this, HT...
Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 08:29 PM by Whoa_Nelly
I've been invited to join a couple of close friends for a trip to France early summer this year. They have family there, sand would not only be attneding a family wedding in the south of France, but would be on the "in" of being there for three weeks.

Talked to my son about it, especially the fact that it will set me back about $$2500, and his response was this: Life's too short. Someday you will be gone. Who cares about the money when you have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to France with friends like that. So, go for it, Mom! Someday you'll be gone, and the money thing will be a non-issue. Live now.

I like that response :)

So, go for it, HT! Buy the camera equipment...it's your life and what you want. :hi:

11. Thank you, mc2!
If I have done nothing else right in my life, I know I raised my son to be a good, decent, loving, and honest man.

Thanks!

7. But it means opening a new credit account...
I'd rather save up and I'm going back to college as well...

And when I played with the camera, I did NOT have the sense of 'want' I normally had. (I don't even want to replace the film scanner...)

I will sleep on it; maybe there will be a sale tomorrow.

But I'm starting anew and need to be a bit more responsible.

Ironic as... not thinkin' of GD right now.

16. Price isn't much lower than best buy's...
And given my recent experience with the film scanner, I intend to get an extended warranty plan.

8. One aspect of...
I should also see if being a student will land any discounts. I know they will for certain software packages, one of which I WOULD consider - but not the others...

And since my life is geared toward intellect over being social... I dunno. It is a tough choice and I've thwarted two attempts to cave into getting a new card. I do not want to abuse it and I want to get some more money in the bank for emergencies, plane travel for vacations, whatever...

5. Yes.
I have a hard time with this one - part of me says, be careful, think about the future. Another part says, there may be no future, why bother being miserable today?

Bah.
