Poll question: Were 'The Police' ever a "supergroup"?
Funky thing, the Grammies... a 20 year old group given a status that's on par with The Beatles or The Rolling Stones despite being just another 80s band, unless I was asleep during the 1980s...?

1. Nopes
The members must be previously famous for being in other groups in order for it to be a Supergroup.

A supergroup is a group comprised of all musicians who excelled previously in other bands.

Led Zeppelin was one - they were made up of "the" London scene musicians at the time.

Traveling Wilburys is another, as are The Highwaymen, Cream and Derek and The Dominoes.

The Police were just a great by-product of late 70's London.

Thank the Sex Pistols - they made it all possible.

6. I Wouldn't Call Zep a Supergroup
Except for Page, outside of London they were all unknown.

Going by the criteria you describe, one could say the Police were a supergroup, as well.

5. They sold a LOT of albums. Synchronicity was the biggest album
of whatever year it came out. Zenyatta Mondatta opened up a lot of teens to world issues.

Having said that, 'supergroup' is often used as a term to describe rock groups made up of members who came together from other successful groups, so it depends on what you mean by the term. Were Police a great group? Not so much. Were they influential? Yes. Were they hugely influential? Probably not so much.
