And speaking of junior high, I never could decide on which girl to ask first to dance at the class party, so I just started with one, and wound up asking most of them.

Most of them turned me down, but at least they got asked.
I even asked the girl that most everyone made fun of, and a couple of guys that were standing nearby started laughing, so she said "you're just doing this to make them laugh."
I said, "no, I just want everyone to have a chance to dance."
She said she would rather not, and I moved on.
I wound up sitting in the stands amongst most of the girls who were wallflowers and wouldn't dance.
They would make comments and giggle, and I pretended not to understand why.

The next day that girl's twin brother told me that I had stunned her by asking her to dance.
He said it was a really nice thing for me to do since I was the class president and one of the most popular kids in class.
I told him it didn't have anything to do with me being class president or being popular, I just wanted everyone to have a good time and to get a chance to dance.

Later that week, some of the guys made fun of me for sitting amongst "the weird girls" and talking to them for the rest of the night.
I told them they had a lot to learn about life; I asked them what was I supposed to do, sit with them and make fun of the way the other kids were dancing like they had been doing.

It wasn't about dancing, or about being popular, or about being the best looking one there, or any of that jazz.
I may have still been just a little kid back then, but I had already figured it out, it was about just being yourself.

It's about respect. And when we respect one another, we can start to trust one another, and then we can start to have faith in one another.
And those are the building blocks for developing any good relationship.
Respect, trust, and faith.

You've taught me a lot during the last year now that you've come out on the dance floor.
You're one hell of a human being. And I'm not just saying that. There's a lot of people that would tell you that, if they were here to tell you.
