Should I get myself a computer for Valentines?
I don't have a SO so I have to just be nice to myself. And I don't have a computer at home so I have to use a friends and the library.

How much would it cost to get a laptop and scanner and printer?

And how much is Roadrunner?

Sure would be a lot easier if I had my own.

Happy Valentines!

1. I can't tell you what it'll cost because there's a good range
and it depends what you want. But I DO agree you should give yourself a V.D. gift.

5. I do feel very lucky. I think maybe they're pity-hearts
because I'm always whining and complaining.

2. yes you should!
I can't give you much advise about cost of the computer and such but shop around online for roadrunner packages. I was able to get 2 years at $99 a month for cable, roadrunner and digital phone. But you have to be really careful to read the fine print because some of the secondary cable sales companies have very, very tiny small print that can screw you.

You deserve your own computer!

4. I don't have cable TV. And my phone is just thru AT&T.
Does AT&T have a package? They probably do. But is the service any good?

6. Does the computer come in chocolate? or at least red?
If not, hold off and give it to yourself to celebrate another holiday. Hey, next Monday is President's Day. Give it to yourself then.

9. A bright red computer? I don't think so.
And no one is going to give me chocolates.

I think I got flowers once on Valentines Day - in my whole life. And they were so cheap that they were dead in 24 hours. So I just called them dried flowers and kept them anyway.

Am I the most pitiful person you have ever met or what?

8.  a laptop is flimsier and more expensive than a desktop
desktops are cheap -- $500 for all the trimmings for my latest from dell

a friend did give me a laptop, but i've used it like once in almost 8 months, they are a little bit of a nuisance to haul around if you're not used to it

plus the keyboards/mouse is more deensy and irritating

so that's my humble vote

11. OK. I think I can get a rebu9ilt computer for just a couple
hundred bucks. And they will upload everything for me. So the computer itself is not the real expense. It is getting the hook up.

10. You have to have a computer at home
I have four that share a printer. Careful research then shopping should leave you nicely oufitted for $800-1000; half that if you buy used through the classifieds. I recently purchased a used Gateway E-Machine with Pent.4 for $100 and it does what it's supposed too. If you buy used though and don't get the OS disk with it be sure to turn automatic update off.

13. Four? What do you need four for? You must have other
people in your household.

Or do they all do different things? That would be fun.

15. Both, I'm a single Dad with 2 1/2 children still at home
One computer runs Windows and Linux, one runs Mac OS, one runs Windows clean and is only used for homework and the last runs delightfully dirty with trojans and viruses squirting out everytime you hit the keyboard and I don't worry about it until Agent Mike locks it up, then I wipe and reload the OS. All but the Mac are used, the clean one is a used Dell that I bought on E-Bay when some office upgraded.

18. Nope, five thumbed Luddite who can't stand being off the web
A real computer guy would only need one. My my graphics and musically talented children need the Mac. I don't have a $1,000 total invested in Bill Gates baubles and that includes monitors and the printer that handles the router. Go buy yourself that home 'puter, you deserve it.

17. Just don't get a virus in the process...

Laptops are between $1000 and $2500... $1500 will get you something decent. Scanners are around $200 (for good ones, and even then), and printers are between $50 and $1000, but think of TCO (lower end printers have expensive cartridges that quickly dwarf the price of the printer itself)
