Give me the best reason the Grammy's suck
Is it because their parameters are limited to artists who get airplay, and airplay is a function of personal business relationships having nothing do with the who is releasing the bestor song record of any particular genre any given year.....or

Is it because the Grammy's are hopelessly dated, and there's better, more objective ways of figuring out who large numbers of people believe is releasing the best new music?

Is there some ways the masses can disoover the best undiscovered. I'm in favor of that, whatever that is.

1. Cause for the most part, "industry" music sucks...
for an example, watch I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, about Wilco's adventure with being let out of a contract after turning in a brilliant finished product, and then selling the same product back to a different branch of the same company, for 3x as much.

2. Because Tenacious D's Fuck Her Gently was snubbed for best song
Ok, it was released several years ago but that's just a technicality. It's the best fucking song that I've ever heard about fucking and fucking is what pop music is all about

3. could they be more out of touch
The whole planet is going specialized and personalized via their own private 10,000GB portable jukeboxes. Yet this dinosaur still attempts to pander to the least common denominator.

6. Huh? Why not Dylan?
One of the greatest singer/songerwriters ever.

Who else was nominated, Justin Timberlake? Britney Spears? Jessica Simpson? Those losers aren't worthy enough to even drive Bob's tour bus.

9. One of the best songwriters ever, most definitely.
But VOCALIST? I always felt it was absolute proof of his greatness
that he became popular DESPITE his vocal ability.

The man can write a song like nobody else, and that's a FACT.

But his voice reminds me of nothing so much as that old
"Andy Griffith Show" episode where Floyd the Barber gets
hooked on smack.

7. New Slayer is pretty by the numbers, sadly
It's good, but totally predictable all the way through. Both Ministry and Mastodon's CDs hit me a lot more, and I still play them both quite bit.Mastodon is a far more challenging and complex listen, and Ministry is just one pissed off slab of bile directed at Bush,so ya can't go wrong.

I like the new Slayer, but I was definately hoping for something a little more fresh and challenging from them with Lombardo back in the fold.

8. Two words: Milli Vanilli
If winning a Grammy wasn't already a stamp of mediocrity before that,it sure as hell is now. It's like having a redneck pick the best Mozart or Duke Ellington song.

19. The Dixie Chicks were a pretty successful act prior to the controversy
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 02:50 PM by Mike Daniels
and I seriously doubt that anyone who really wanted to sample the album couldn't find a source (on-line, music store listening station).

In any other year I would question whether the Chicks could have garnered a country nomination and award on an album that wasn't all that country to begin with.

13. The Best reason... Most of the music featured is crap
There's tons of music released every year only to be whittled down to the shit they play on the radio. To me, it's nothing more than a popularity contest.

15. Because I think the televised awards are partly driven by ratings
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 02:53 PM by Mike Daniels
Out of x number of awards only 11 are televised over a 3.5 hour show. Yet all of these awards are the big kahunas such as record of the year, song of the year, etc...

Because of the marquee value of these awards they need to have the nominees be people that viewers will tune into to see.

Imagine an awards show where on a given year the nominees for the big awards could within reason include people like Richard Thompson or Nick Cave. Who is going to tune in to see a show that could possibly give a major award to an artist with limited mass market appeal?

Nominated: "Fight the Power," Public Enemy.
Won: "Bust A Move," Young MC.

This was when I discovered the Grammys were irrelevant, as is most of the major music industry.

36. What it is at this point is the VOTING members are pretty darn aged. Back when I was in the
biz, many of the voting members were in their 40s,50, and 60s. Now add 15-20 years to that. ALOT of these people are still voting.

25. Because it's about sales, not necessarily talent.
The best album I heard last year was Yo La Tengo's "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass."

A brilliant album that received zero nominations, yet the Grammys continually nominate crap like Kid Rock every year.

I don't like any of the music that won last night. Granted, I like the fact that the dixie Chicks won five of them, but it's sort of like the Oscars - the last movie nominated for one that I actually saw was Titanic, and that was on video.

Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 05:49 PM by tigereye

Ornette Coleman gets no applause (unless I missed it) and has to introduce someone from American Idol.(this comment courtesy of an ex- DUer with formidable music knowledge)

People actually compete to sing with Timberlake. :hangover:

The audience is studded with bad actors/ actresses/ wannabe singers. (Why are they there?)

There isn't a 10-20-30 minute tribute to James Brown. Half of those people wouldn't be there at all without James Brown. Yes, there was a tribute, but it was cheesy. They should have bagged most of the show and just run a tribute to Brown (or hell, even youtube segments would have sufficed!) and everyone he influenced and they would have been ahead of almost every other music awards show ever presented.

Bland, written by others, playlisted, never to offend pap dominates the entire thing.

Progressive programming to the Academy is a Police Reunion. (again, I love the Police, but really!)

Focus is on whose tits hang out the most.

John Mayer represents the blues. Yes, he can play the blues better than many, but not all, guys his age, but come on.

The most outrageous segment is the RHCP's blandest song ever.

and yes, I watch it to see the trainwreck, I admit it.

Cheers.
