Say you could pick acts to perform at the Grammys.....
who would get to play?

Post acts that would have actually made the Grammys cool, not boring, phat, fly, sick, whatever term your generation prefers. Post folks that would never see the light of day under the current regime. Feel free to pick folks who would please you but horrify and send most folks screaming from their tv room. Anything to have make them interesting, not death- inducing, over- commercialized, pap- swilling, media kool aide drinking, publicist-screwing, deadly dull. People that love music and can actually play and compose.

Who would I love to see? Who would frighten, shock, terrify and possibly amaze America? Who should be on there? Granted, a large number of them are dead, sadly, and corpses would not be appropriate. But I suppose one could pick a lineup of those who are no longer with us, too.

Here's my highly indiosyncratic list for starters....
Iggy Pop for starters, in his wrinkly, but energetic glory.
Adrian Belew
Queen Ida
Lydia Lunch
Anthony Braxton - everyone should be made to sit and listen to at least part or one of his compositions.
Phillip Glass
NoFx, just for the fun of it.
Tom Waits
Captain Beefheart
Abbey Lincoln
Meredith Monk
Gwar? That would be amusing, wouldn't it?
The woman who plays jazz on various balloons.
Pauline Oliveros
Calvin from Beat Happening
my old buddy Jason Gibbs, wherever he may be....

2. wow that was quick!
I'm shocked, shocked that you would pick them! You need to get out more, dear. ;) j/k

It's funny there was a Midnight Special ad on tv selling acts from that show, and of SD in all their coked out, long haired stoner glory, with 70s garments and curly- haired singers. Boy did that make me feel old.

Donald Fagen circa 1973 is fucking hysterical.

3. NOFX at the Grammys?
Wow...yeah, that would be...interesting. They'd probably play their Lesbian Love Song trilogy ("Liza and Louise," "Liza," and "Louise") and drive the FCC and the broadcasters insane. :P

Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 06:38 PM by tigereye
I put GWAR on there for a serious poke in the FCC's eye (and gonads, I suspect).

NoFx were very cute (and goofy and generally inoffensive) on Conan a few summers ago. It was kind of sweet.

I'm from Cleveland and grw up in that time period, so I have some great memories of that era. And it's gotta be Ubu w/ Peter Laughner, especially if they do Final Solution..

I could have kicked myself. And I missed Chris Stamey, too.

Ubu was a very very big deal here at the time. We wore out the grooves on the Modern Dance.

34. Midnight Special was a pretty good rock show from the 70s
they are releasing DVD's of it with lots of 70s acts who look like, well, drug- addled 70s acts with some really great stuff thrown in. You might not be old enough to remember, or, the ads are not in your area. Sorry to confuse.

how are you, KA?

You do know I don't really live down there, right? I'm out here in (take a wild guess) Hawai'i, and even managed to miss the Oct. quake while traveling.

I have, obviously, sort of reclaimed dual citizenship with N.O. and, in fact, just returned from a mind-blowing visit last month. Short version: Get y'all selves back down there before the drunken hordes realize it's still there and reoccupy the choice spots. I even understand there are still some hotel rooms available for Mardi Gras (now through next Tues.)!

The Fall, Public Enemy, The Saints, Yoko Ono, Motorhead, Kraftwerk featuring Joe Byrd and Patty Waters, The Coup, Wire, John Zorn, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Lou Reed Performing "Metal Machine Music" in its entirety, RuPaul, and the fuckin' Stooges.

That should be enough to give the loathsome RIAA a collective stroke.

John Zorn telling people to shut the F up or he'll come into the audience and mess with them. That would be pretty intriguing!

I have often wished that MMM could be broadcast over a few commercial airwaves, as well.
