She's just started pre-school this year and she's really growing up fast now. She is my parents' only grandchild and they've spoiled her like good grandparents are supposed to do. So instead of me getting her some gift that she'll outgrow in a year I've decided to do something different. I started a savings account for her and I deposit money into it for her birthday and Christmas and just get her a card. She will have the money as a graduation gift when she gets older. I have two other sisters who may or may not have children, but I will do the same for their kids if they have any.

I'm a loner by choice and I don't plan on having any children.

CMW and I have only Ginger, but we do a similar thing for our goddaughters. Instead of depositing into their savings accounts, we help give them important opportunities they might not otherwise have, like the 15-year-old's class trip to London in May. :)

72. Thank you, Heidi! She was so shy when I first brought her home,

and actually wouldn't even let me pet her for the first two weeks. I think that playing with her really broke the ice - she loved the feather on the fishing pole, and the laser just drove her nuts! I can't believe how much she's warmed up to me - I pull out the slicker brush and work on her back, and she'll flop on the floor on one side, let me work on that side, and then get up and flop over on the other side so I don't miss any spots! It's amazing how strongly those bonds develop in such a short time frame!

We've known Ginger since the moment he was born; his mom is one of my mother-in-law's cats, so we were able to visit him every day before he was weaned. Since we knew he'd be coming to live with us at 15 weeks, we slowly let him get used to our smells, sounds and touch throughout the first 15 weeks of his life, visiting him daily to stroke him all over his little kitten body. When he came to live with us, it was a perfectly natural transition because we were already his. :) The other good thing is, he's been accustomed to our touch since birth, so it's no problem if we have to take a thorn out of his paw, or check his his teeth and ears, etc.

107. I had purchased a book on cat psychology/behavior

a couple of months back, which essentially stated the same thing about interacting with a new cat. They certainly like to make all the decisions!

The socialization that kittens experience is a major factor in personality development, and I'm sure that the large majority of "mean" adult cats were probably mishandled as kittens, and are just incredibly defensive as a result. On the flip side, though, I've seen some formerly feral cats in shelters that were very sweet and trusting, but I suppose they were lucky enough not to have experienced any kind of abusive treatment from anyone as they were growing.

Ginger is a great-looking cat - I love that close-up of his face in the earlier thread picture. Is he one of the "apple-head" type Siamese?

He just _thinks_ he is. But we figure he has some applehead Siamese in him from somewhere. His mother is grey and white, and his father is black and white. We have no idea how he turned out like he did. :shrug:

After we split, we figured it wouldn't be in their best interest to split them up as they had such a bond with each other. Ginger's eyes are as striking as any Siamese I've seen at a show or anywhere else for that matter.
