My father-in-law died this morning, just three months short of his
90th birthday. I was hoping that he would make it to then, but I believe he went relatively easily.

I must say, the man really wanted to be remembered. He not only passed during a blizzard that has the northeast closed down (my husband doesn't know if he'll be able to fly in for the funeral or be snowed out), and on Valentine's Day, but also my birthday.

He has had what his wife called dementia (increasingly) for the last few years, but it was mostly an inability to remember. He also had leaky valve and clogged arteries.

I would listen to my husband talking to him on the phone, telling him patiently at least for or five times in ten or so minutes, that, yes, my husband has children, two boys and a girl, what he does for a living, where we live, and once in a while, who he was.

F-I-L was a nice man and I enjoyed talking to him in the days when he remembered that he had a son and that his son was married with children.

I hope you're having a blast on the other side, EES,Jr. We will be thinking of you and we will remember you.

1. Condolences to you and your family.
It sounds like he had a pretty good, long, life. That's some consolation, I imagine.

2. My condolences.
My FIL died last year and had increasing dementia, also. We all agreed that it was much better for him that way than the fate that awaited him down the road.

My best to you and yours.

6. If he went easy at 89, that's a good run. Still good that you miss him, though.

8. Thank you all for your good wishes. He did have a long run and
was happy in his last few years in spite of (or perhaps because of) the dementia.

11. 89 3/4 years is a long life, and it doesn't sound like he suffered
My father-in-law died three months before he would have turned 80, four years ago, from cancer.
Life gets difficult when you get old, and the amazing human body and mind finally wear out.

P.S. Since you said it was your birthday on Valentine's day, but your minds were on this, I hope you and your husband will celebrate another day, and may you have a happy substitute birthday!
