I just saw the most wonderful sight on the way in to class this morning.
I was travelling due east and the sun was about 10-12 degrees toward the south from due east. There was a fog laying close to the fields along the highway extending into the distance, although at -15, I don't know how we could have fog. The sun was a giant neon orangy glowglobe balanced on the edge of the world and then it separated and rose a bit. The ends of a rainbow appeared to either side of it at a distance and the sun itself took on an elongated shape as a column of misty light shot up from it and extended down to the earth. The column had the faint hints of a rainbow to it. It was so beautiful and other worldly. I wish I could have taken a picture of it but I didn't have my camera with me. I'd never seen the sun appear in this way before. It was breathtaking.

1. Sun pillars.
Need to have special ice crystals in the atmosphere in a certain arrangement.

4. Those rainbow ends are called sun dogs
Google sun dogs to learn more about them. I've seen them at sunset, but never in the morning. Wish you could have gotten a picture. Bet it was beautiful.

5. The pillar of the sun, guarded by sun dogs...what a wonderful
mental image that makes as well. When you see a phenomena like this you understand how the ancient cultures developed the imagery in mythology.

8. I am from Alabama and so had never seen sun dogs before I made
a trip with my wife to visit her folks up in west-central Minnesota - on the White Earth Reservation. We were driving up and the sun was setting and there were these two illuminated globes at a distance on either side of the sun. I kind of freaked-out about it (suspecting a flashback) and my wife just laughed and told me about "sun dogs". They are beautiful and seem not a little mystical to me...

9. Sunbow - Whirling Rainbow - central prophetic image for Turtle Island (North America)
Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 09:24 AM by SpiralHawk
There is an entire saga about this on the net: Odyssey of the 8th Fire -- telling the true story of a pilgrimage across North America on foot, under the sign of the Sunbow or Whirling Rainbow.

It's connected to the teachings of the Seven Fires, the White Buffalo, and the House of Mica (UN Headquarters).

10. From that website you posted,
"The Whirling Rainbow (Sunbow) is the promise of peace among all Nations and people," Sams wrote. "The Whirling Rainbow will appear in the form of a Sun Dog to those who are ready to see...Many Sun Dogs will be seen around the time of the White Buffalo, which will be the sky language sign that the Secret and Sacred Teachings are to be shared with all races. Enough of the Children of the Earth will be awakened to carry the responsibility of the teachings, and the healing process will begin in full swing."

Let us pray this is so.

15. Wow, sounds wonderful.
Since I've moved to the country I've seen ball lightning and a shooting star break up like fireworks but I've not seen the sun dogs.

17. Once when I was driving across Arizona I saw the most
beautiful rainbow. I couldn't take my eyes off of it because it was so vibrant and clear. As I got up to it, I actually saw the end of it; the ground was lit up like it had a huge spotlight on it. Alas, there was no pot of gold though.

18. I used to see those from time to time in Upstate New York.
When it was very cold, and the ice crystals were in the air in the Susquehanna River valley. It was magical.

I'm glad you got to experience that beauty.
