I fucking hate people.
In my debate class today somebody was arguing- with a straight face and apparently perfect sincerity- that the Iraq war was both justified and inevitable because Saddam was connected to AQ and Bin Laden and helped to plan 9-11.

I was not aware that anybody who wasn't an absolute gaptoothed ignorant Faux-News watching pigfucker still had that particular dumbass idea. Hell, even Bush said it wasn't true, and he's a lying moron.

For some reason this class has a much higher fundamentalillness quotient than the surrounding population, and it's doing bad things to my blood pressure. The instructor rocks though. :)

3. Ohhh! Next week I get argue why abstinence-only sex ed basically sucks.
Although in slightly more articulate terms than aforementioned. I hope.
Too bad we can't share in the class experience. We could grit our teeth and smile knowingly at one another.

And then jump the stupid effer in the hall, after class.

9. Somebody debated that last class
Well sort of, they were doing condom distro in schools but the opposition went for the abstinence ed angle (which was funny, because we don't have that here and the state forgoes federal funding for sex ed to make that happen, so all of my classmates presumably got comprehensive sex ed in school and didn't suffer any harm.)

7. Its been more then 30 years since I was in a debate class
(damn good at it too if I may say so) but isn't it required to debate both sides of an issue? Pro? Con?

Resolved that hussein was in on 9-11? A good high school or college debater would have to defend both sides in an effort to promote intellectual curiousity.

In my day it was virtues of changing the jury system and changing the calculations for overtime pay.

10. Everybody had to prepare for both sides of their issue.
We had two people arguing for and two against.

The resolution was actually that Bush was hungry for war, which isn't a very good resolution but I don't get to write them or they'd all be wonky policy issues. I think the opposition made a tactical error in arguing that the war was justified and told them so.

11. Neocons are not real people.
They're aliens, like in the John Carpenter film They Live...or the space pods from Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

12. Karl Rove was the top debater in his high school class and beyond...
he did not acquire that handle by being per se reasonable, nor pertinent to the issue, or matter at hand far from it; but by winning debates

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG7grxBKHVg

well you may ask instead, "Just what does it take to 'win' a debate?" the answer seems at times little more than to obfuscate your opponents points while making them look, seem...or appear the jackass, when in fact, or clearly, it may even be yourself

sadder still, that has become the status quo for what used to be debate in america

13. Not as much as I do, baby.
How does your intructor deal with the obviously mentally deficient? Verbally crucify them? Or just let them be to wallow in their own filth?

14. Mostly she tries to avoid bias by letting after-class discussion handle factual errors and bad logic
Later debates are going to be more evidence-based formats, so I'm hoping we won't have too much of that nonsense on more thoroughly researched issues.

15. That could end up being pretty funny!
I can pictures the rightwingers now - "But... but... earlier in the semester you didn't require that we have footnotable facts and evidence!"

"That's because in the beginning it didn't matter."

in a span of about five minutes yesterday. From different people. I had to turn on my MP3 player and listen to music. That kind of stupidity just makes me tense up. :banghead:

You just cock your head and wonder...how the hell have they lived this long?

In the wild, they'd have been eaten by their own.
