DAYTONA BEACH -- There was a major problem with AirTran Airway's flight 897 from Baltimore on Thursday: It ran out of beer.
"Then, they ran out of vodka, too," said Andy Dawson, who was ready to get the party started on his way to the Daytona 500. "I guess all of us race fans drank the plane dry."
Otherwise, Dawson of Annapolis, Md., gave AirTran's inaugural flight from Baltimore to Daytona Beach high marks.
"It was a smooth landing and the most friendly staff I've ever seen," said Dawson, who was only able to down about four cans of beer before the plane's beverage shortfall.
Dawson's flight left the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, known as BWI, at 8 a.m. and was full with 117 passengers. The airport was filled with race fans as the flight arrived at 10:15 a.m., just five minutes late.
