6. Uh, you don't "get rid" of children. You "get rid" of posessions.
An animal is a living being. It sounds like you're making this decision lightly, and that doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

7. Yeah, my pets are my "children."
Edited on Fri Feb-16-07 08:29 PM by haruka3_2000
The only way I would get rid of any of them is if I had a fatal disease and wanted to find them a good home before I died, and it would be HELL for me to do that.

Of course, I love my animals and respect them as living creatures. Not some mere possession.

Hell, I keep one of my bearded dragons because I know that between his highly aggressive personality and physical disability, he would be hard to place in a new home. He bites me and draws blood, but I keep him because I know that no one else would really want to let him live a full, happy life. And that is "just" a lizard, not a cat that I've OWNED for over a year.

8. Hey, "ask me anything" doesn't sound like a serious decision was made?
Poor kitty.

And no, this is NOT any type of personal attack. I honestly don't understand how people can get rid of pets they've had for any length of time. Ripping an animal from it's home and the people it knows just because is, imo, cruel.

33. ummm...
It does sound to me like it is, if not a " PERSONAL attack" then a JUDGMENTAL attack.

Maybe you need to get over whatever it is, and stop taking a copy cat thread so PERSONALLY.

22. you people do realize that this was a copycat to the 17 child having thread right?
and if you want to be sanctimonious find someone else. this cat was never mine. i only took it because i didnt want it on the streets, and actually am doing my best to get it a home. which is why its been with me for so long.

also i dont need to inspire confidence in you. those whose confidence i need, have it in me anyway.

As for me, I applaud you for your maturity in realizing you can't care for it any more and are trying to find it a different home. Like a responsible person.

I hope you can find a good place for it!

I think you mean responsible per owners. The flippant attitude bothers me almost as much as the actions.

Why the personal attack? Oh forget it -- I don't care.

19. Responsible pet owners do what's best for the animal, not what some
Edited on Fri Feb-16-07 08:58 PM by Rabrrrrrr
nebulous liberal (or whatever it is) silly dogmatic stance requires them to do.

I have a friend's fish in my fish tank because it got too big for her tank - I guess she's just a great big fake-liberal miserable irresponsible piece of shit for not going out and spending $1000 for a bigger tank.

I'll let her know what putrid human filth she is when I hand her fish back to her. I despise myself for being complicit in this crime.

11. Sometimes pets can be difficult to manage. I hope you find a home.
We had to combine my two plus his two cats. After 10 months of fighting, one of mine was killed by dogs. The overt fighting stopped. Now we just cope with the occasional Piss War. It's been five years, and we occasionally discuss fostering one of the cats. We think she would be much much happier as an only pet for someone.

Good luck.

12. Do what you need to do
I was in a similar situation before. My ex (baby daddy) got me a kitten as a "birthday present", knowing full well I am not a cat person (HE was a cat person and had been begging me to get one), didn't want one, and am in fact allergic to them (worst birthday present ever, it's like when Homer bought Marge a bowling ball that was really for himself).

This was a kitten of a stray, she had worms, shit diarrhea all over my bedroom (including my new $250 bedspread, which was completely ruined and had to be tossed), and was just plain unwelcome. I nursed her back to health, got her all of her shots and fixed (at my expense) and took care of her for 3 years (1 1/2 years longer than I dealt with the ex). I did not want the cat, in fact, I pretty much resented her continued presence in my home.

I gave her a good life, the best food, healthcare, I showed her tons of affection and played with her, even when it made me *literally* sick. I finally decided, as much as I was a member of the "pets are for life" club, she needed to go, and my allergies were not my top reason for this.

I got off my high horse and I found a very good home for her, where, I am told she is still a very happy and healthy cat. I still talk with the couple who took her (the wife was a classmate of mine in vet tech school and an admitted "crazy cat lady") even though they've moved across the country. This was the best thing for her, and for me. Because, really, I could have been like the thousands of pet owners a year who just dump their unwanted pets on the street or worse, but I made the effort to find her a good home, knowing full well that she would be happier there than with me. We never fault a mother who gives her child up for adoption because she just can't/doesn't want to take of the child and wants to give the kid a better life, why fault pet owners who do the same?

27. How long have you had it?
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 12:57 AM by seawolf
Is this something all three cats might adjust out of?

Edit: Never mind, read the other reply where you said you'd had it 1.5 years.

If you can stand giving it another six months, I'd say see if it settles down. It takes a couple years for some cats to adjust.

If not, find a nice, clean, healthy no-kill shelter and place it there. The cat can't help the fact that your ex dumped it with you.
