"Make Room for Daddy", anyone remember watching this tv show.
I am watching a DVD of the show with the commericals.

Now I remember watching this show as a small child but I didn't know that there had been two wifes.

I remember another woman playing Danny's wife, what happened to the first one.

The shows were made in 1955 so I would have be to young to remember.

The commericals are great, smoke and drive big cars.

31. TV & Radio - My Only Escape From the Surrounding Disfunction in My Childhood...
I loved "Leave It To Beaver" because, for a half hour a week, I could identify with a kid who could become the hero & didn't get abused when he screwed up.

32. I remember Leave to Beaver.
The only episode I remember is when Beaver climbs into a giant cup on a bill board because Gilbert dared him.

I have gay male friend who told me he had hots for Wally, that is how he knew he was gay.

These days you'd have to have the hots for Justin Timberlake in order to know you're gay.

6. I was kinda young at the time...but I remember the two wives....
First one was Jean Hagen. Maybe she wanted out of the program? Second wife was Marjorie Lord. I think they portrayed the same wife.

There was an older daughter played by someone I cannot remember and the younger was Veronica Cartwright.

I loved that show.

13. Angela Cartwright
She had a brother played by Rusty Hamer. Can't remember his character name, but I think hers was Kathy. I don't remember an older daughter, though.

I can vaguely remember the layout of their house. There was a small stairway behind the living room that ran left-to-right. And the furniture was late-'50s upper-middle-class.

Seems like DT had some kind of catch word or phrase, too.

40. Sherry Jackson played the older daughter.
Kathy (Marjorie Lord) was definitely the second wife. I think that Jean Hagen's character was less sympathetic, more broad comedy.

Rusty was also the character's name.

27. No, Jean Hagen and Marjorie Lord were different wives
According to the script, the Jean Hagen wife died, and a season or so later, he married the Marjorie Lord character, who had a small daughter (played by Angela Cartwright, Veronica's sister).

The older daughter was played by Sherry Jackson.

I can't believe I know this stuff.

36. First wife was Jean Hagen.
They had two children, Rusty and Terry. I think Hagen's character was named Margaret. In the show, Margaret died (I think Jean Hagen left to be in Singing In The Rain), and later Danny remarried Cathy (Marjorie Lord). By then Terry had grown up, Rusty was still at home, and Cathy had a little girl (Angela Cartwright). Veronica Cartwright was the little girl in "The Birds."

16. Here is some info.
Series
Danny Thomas played Danny Williams, a successful comedian and nightclub entertainer. Jean Hagen was his wife Margaret, Sherry Jackson their daughter Terry, and Rusty Hamer their son Rusty. Louise Beavers played the maid Louise. In 1955, Beavers left and was replaced in the role by Amanda Randolph.

In 1956 Jean Hagen quit the show, and the producers had her character written out as having died. The following season, Thomas's character dated several women, with the help of his children. At the end of the season, he met widowed Kathy O'Hara, played by Marjorie Lord, who had a young daughter, Linda, played by Angela Cartwright. No wedding was ever shown, but when the show returned in 1957, with the new title, Danny and Kathy were married, and Linda was adopted by Danny.

Hans Conried had frequent guest appearances as Danny's Lebanese "Uncle Tonoose". Other frequent guests included Bill Dana, Annette Funicello, Pat Harrington Jr., Sheldon Leonard (the show's producer) and Thomas protegee Italian teenaged singer Piccola Pupa.

In 1958 the character of Terry was written out as she was supposedly away at school. The character returned the following year, recast with actress Penny Parker. She, too, was written out when the character married and left the show.

Syndication packaging
The show is packaged for syndication as below,

The Jean Hagen episodes
Seasons 1-3 are known as the Jean Hagen Episodes. These episodes have not been offered for syndication since 1964, but they still are shown on rare occasions (see Syndication section below).

The Marjorie Lord episodes
Seasons 5-11 are the Marjorie Lord Episodes. Season Four is often dubbed the "widowed episodes", but they are also sold in syndication with the Marjorie Lord episodes. These are the most commonly run episodes. The "widowed episodes" are linked with The Jean Hagen Episodes. Also, the name change (The Danny Thomas Show) came right after Jean Hagen left the show in 1956.

17. Watched it all the time.....here's a synopsis
Make Room for Daddy followed the misadventures in the lives of the Williams family. Danny Williams, a nightclub entertainer, (a character almost identical to that of Danny Thomas himself) tries to strike a balance between family life and the entertainment business.

In the beginning the family consisted of his wife, Margaret (played by Jean Hagen,) his 11-year-old daughter, Terry (played by Sherry Jackson) and his 6-year-old son, Rusty (played by Rusty Hamer.) In 1956, however, Jean Hagen quit the show and Danny Thomas decided to continue on without her. Her character was written out as having herself died and Danny was now a widower.
The next season (1956-1957) featured Danny dating various other women with plenty of input from the kids. Finally he proposed to Kathy O'Hara, a young nurse.

The 5th season opened with Danny and Kathy returning from their honeymoon. Also joining the cast was Linda (played by Angela Cartwright,) Kathy's 5-year-old daughter by a previous marriage.

Marlo Thomas...Danny Thomas' daughter.

26. William Demarest
He had a recurring role as Kathy's irascible Irish father who didn't much care for Danny. Also, the oldest girl was not seen for a while as she was supposed to be away at college but then they decided to bring her back as a young adult. One of the actresses who auditioned was Mary Tyler Moore but Danny told her that with a tiny nose like hers no one would ever believe she was his daughter.

Veronica Cartwright did have a role on another family sitcom; she was Violet Rutherford, Lumpy's little sister, on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER.

I used to love MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY. I wonder if it's out on DVD yet?

There was also an updated version called MAKE ROOM FOR GRANDDADDY which only lasted a season or two.

19. Danny Thomas was great - he established St. Jude Children's Hospital

And he and Sheldon Leonard produced shows like The Andy Griffith Show and the Dick Van Dyke Show (and his son Tony was the "Thomas" in Witt-Thomas-Harris Productions which produced TV shows like Soap, Benson, The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Beauty and the Beast, as well as Dead Poets Society).

Sadly, Rusty Hamer (Danny's TV son) killed himself years after leaving the Make Room for Daddy.

I don't know the name of the actor who played his agent in later years, but he's the guy who sometimes played Sophia's late husband on "The Golden Girls."

He also played "Alf Monroe" on GREEN ACRES. Pat Carroll played his wife Bunny.

Also, Pat Harrington, Jr. who later was "Schneider" on "One Day At A Time" played an up and coming young comic who married Danny's older daughter.
