1. Hi aA! Jazz nuts!
What a great start! Love the incense and 'shish sound of the late Gabor Szabo's guitar on that Chico Hamilton cut. And "Say Yeah Yeah" is one of my all time favorite tunes, written by Jon Hendricks and Pat Patrick, with mind blowing performance by my friend, Clark Terry.

Is there time for "Do Right" by Peggy Lee?

5. In Ft. Lauderdale? I'll take a look outside. LOL
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 12:45 PM by IMModerate
Nope, not yet. Seriously, the weather today is perfect. We have few where you'd want to sit around outside, other than at the beach. I'm going to play in the drum circle at Fern Forest Park later this afternoon.

I like guitars too. I own some that I can hardly play. I'd like to hear Lenny Breau, who I'm not really familiar with, though I've heard the name. Last week, Jess played some Barney Kessel, whom I love, and she introduced me to Bireli Lagren, who is incredible and plays hot jazz (Django style.) (Hints.)

Good to "see" you, auntAgonist. :hi:

9. 'Cause I made it a point to get to Ann Arbor last summer...
When I was in Michigan last summer, so I could meet the great Jessica Webster in person. There is no better jazz dj! I also met some great folks, and experienced a beautiful town. Sorry I missed you! I look forward to getting back some time, but I'll skip the winter, thank you.

8. I like the quote attributed to Dizzy Gillespie:
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 12:56 PM by Blue-Jay
"Toots Thielemans would be my favorite musician if he'd just get rid of that damn harmonica!"

The first time I ever heard Toots (back in the 80's when I was about 15) I thought "Wow. That's a HARMONICA?!?"

EDIT: Damn, listen to that guy! Thanks, Jess.

13. I saw him with Paquito in '86 or '87.
Great show. Both of those guys are nice as hell too. Something about Paquito makes you want to hug him.

And you're so right about the nice. Drips off of both of them. Dizzy was that way.

On edit: Not sure if you saw Dizzy or Toots with Paquito.

19. Toots with Paquito. They had recorded an album together.
I saw Dizzy at around the same time. My old mentor, Johnny Lytle, brought me backstage to meet Dizzy. I can't describe how sweet and saint-like Dizzy was... I was a sophomore music major at the time, and Dizzy kept asking me questions about my education, my favorite music, my favorite artists, etc. He even made some suggestions on the methodology of woodshedding and improvising. It was so surreal. Almost like meeting Buddha or something.

22. Cool. I remember Johnny Lytle!
The first time I met Dizzy, he was playing at the Metropole on 52nd Street. I dragged my girlfriend away from her senior prom on Long Island, and we went into Manhattan. Though she was underage, they let us in after some pleading at the door. Dizzy sat down next to my girlfriend and started chatting her up.

Moody and Kenny Baron were in the band. Great music, then we went to the beach. Prom night.

Dizzy was very big on jazz education and bringing young people along. It was like meeting Buddha.
