OMFG! My kingdom for a CD player!
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 03:32 PM by jane_pippin
My CD player died recently. Well. It only plays up to 9 minutes worth of any cd before it starts freaking out and skipping. It's part of a stereo system, not one of those boom box things. (Speaking of which, how is the phrase "boom box" still in use? Never would have thought that would last past 1987, but anyway).
So I've been casually looking online, assuming Best Buy or even Target would be an easy place to at least find out about how much a new one would cost. But no. Can't even find them. Just DVD players, MP3 players, iPods, radios. Stand alone CD stereo component? Nah. Who needs one?

The most annoying thing is that my receiver is older than I am and that works just fine and dandy but my cd player, cassette player, and record player--all 5 years old, tops--worthless pieces of crap.

So now instead of listening to my awesome jams on my good speakers throughout my house, I have to listen to iTunes stuff through my crappy computer speakers which have a range of about a room and a half.

I hate the future and its modern problems.

1. The music died at my house, too.
My surround sound just bit the dust. Audio is full of static, and we've tried everything. So, I went to amazon and bought this little gem. I buy usually one or two CD's a week and I can't live without my music. I have another micro system at our lake cottage and I love it.

Panasonic SC-PM53 180-Watt 5-CD Executive Micro System. It had a very good rating by consumers that have bought it, and was very inexpensive -- $134.00.

2. Thanks for the rec
I'm really hoping to find just a cd player component because I like my old-timey receiver and I love my speakers--they were from a set of six custom built for a bar. The bar closed and sold its stuff off so I snagged two. But, failing that I'll keep this system in mind. It looks pretty fancy, and that's not a bad price.

3. Are stereo system's obsolete?
I think so. When I was looking, all I could find was MP3's, Ipods, docking stations, and audio/video combinations. I'm a product of the 70's, and I'm sure I fall into the category of a luddite, because I still want a stereo with components. I also still want to touch and hold my music. I want to see the cover art, and take the CD out of it's jewel case. I actually miss vinyl. Call me crazy.

Good luck on your hunt!!!!

6. I don't think so. I think there are enough
people who prefer that way of doing things--audiophiles, djs, etc--that they're still available. Perhaps they aren't as available at big box kind of stores so much. Which is fine, I suppose. Just means some hunting around at some local places. Which for convenience's sake I'd have liked to avoid, but these things happen.

Eh, I won't call you crazy for that. I like my records too. Lots of people do, so they're not going anywhere either.

And thanks for the good luck wishes.

9. You need to meet my Dad
He can hook you up. He buys CD players, DVD players and VCR's at yardsales all the time. And they ALWAYS work. It blows my mind. If I bought them they'd be dead as a doornail when I got them home. A couple of weeks ago I asked him if I could watch one of his movies and he gave me a DVD player to go with it that he'd gotten at a yard sale for like $5. It's bizarre the luck he has with stuff like that.

10. That's funny you say that.
My stereo system is the same as my dad's. He found it a few years ago, bought one for him and gave the other to me for my birthday. He and I are the family music nerds, so he's always been cool about hooking me up with things like that. But...he always gets them at some weird, discount, "I know a guy" type place and they always are just on the cusp of being obsolete. (This one, for instance, only recognizes some forms of burned cd's because, and I quote the dad here, "it depends how they were burned." Whatever that means.
His stuff never seems to break though. Just mine. So he never believes that the components themselves are in any way shoddy. Oh well. It's still nice of him to hook me up, however Homer Simpsonian his efforts wind up being.

I'm glad you have a dad with good mojo in this department.
