What is your favorite documentary film?
Mine is "Paris Is Burning". Back when PBS was really good, I remember seeing this late one night as a teenager. It was the first time as a closeted gay teen that I felt like I had found some family. I would never be allowed at the balls, but will always find this part of the gay community fascinating and empowering.

140. Another vote for "Hoop Dreams"
so much of that film has stayed with me since I saw it years ago. "Hoop Dreams" really had an impact. Both of the mothers really affected me. I teared up when the one young man was leaving for Marquette and his mother was crying. There's also that remarkable sequence when the other young man and his family visit the University of Illinois campus. I guess because I grew up in Illinois, and visited the U. of I. often, as well as Chicago, those scenes of the family having this very unusual experience made me realize how differently many people live. The two young men, boys actually, were just so honest, as was the entire film. One of the best films ever - documentary or otherwise.

6. I do like "The Celluoid Closet"
Years ago, I read Vito Russo's excellent book about how gay men and lesbians have been portrayed on film. It was an absolutely fascinating book.

The film is just as interesting. For those who haven't seen it, it's definitely worth a look.

BTW: I'm sorry to say that I haven't, until now, seen "Paris is Burning". But I put it on my Netflix queue...and it arrived today. :-)

10. OMG.
I love "The Celluloid Closet". When I bartended, I used to show that one all the time. Easy way to keep the boys around for hours. The most fascinating part for me is when they show clip after clip of movies that called us "fags" or "sissies", etc.

I hope you enjoy "Paris". If I ever stumble across it changing channels I end up watching it until the end.

9. My dear JackBeck!
Mine is called "Fly Away Home" I think......

It's about the young Canada geese who are orphaned, and who are taught how to fly to their winter home by a guy with an ultralight plane.

Oh God, now I'm thinking this wasn't a documentary!

Still worth seeing though...

But there was a documentary several years ago, that got the Oscar that was about birds and their migrations...

It was amazing.....

I recommend it highly!

127. That one was very good!
Logo has been showing a lot of documentaries, and this one hits their regular rotation fairly often. I have to say, I get so steamed when I watch this movie though. How dare ANYONE (I'm talking to you, Florida!) deny a child a loving home for such a stupid and regressive reason as the parents just happen to be gay? Another good documentary is We Are Dad, watching that one makes me even more angy at people who are actively seeking to deny children their right to a good and loving permanent home.

116. I saw Avi Lewis speak 2 weeks ago
He was fantastic; covered so many different topics; and does that man know how to rant! No, this isn't a stiff Keith Olbermann rant, his is pure passion. It's obvious whatever he's involved in, he fully throws himself into it.

He used to be the host/moderator on a wonderful debate show on cbc called "counterSpin"...and it was great to see this 'socialist', as he calls himself, butting heads with the leading conservatives/republicans in the US - and stumping them completely. :D (there were 4 panellists - 2 representing the left, the other 2 the right) - damn, he could out argue any of them! (Chomsky seemed to be a favoured guest on there)

32. Burden of Dreams (1982) - A documentary on the chaotic production of Werner Herzog's epic:
'Fitzcarraldo' , showing how the film managed to get made despite problems that would have floored a less obsessively driven director. Not only does he have major casting problems, losing both Jason Robards (health) and Mick Jagger (other commitments) halfway through shooting, but the crew gets caught up in a war between Peru and Ecuador, there are problems with the weather and the morale of cast and crew is falling rapidly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitzcarraldo

70. um, yes involved
They stormed a ranch on Pine Ridge Reservation and began shooting at a house from their car. Members of AIM shot back and one Native and two feds were killed. The FBI then lied about ballistics, forced confessions and witness statements from people who were not present at the time, and illegally extradicted Leonard from Canada. Leonard was tried with two others, but he was found guilty. They have later said that there was no evidence, but that someone had to pay.

It was classic fbi bully tactics and lying. Still Leonard sits in a jail cell in poor health some 30 years later.

It's a documentary about those still living in the Dead Zone around Chernobyl, and the funny thing is, it's anything but dead. It's full of radiation, yes, but plant and animal life is flourishing. Apparently people still work in there too. Anyway, the interview a lady who used to live there, and they walk through her old neighborhood and she takes them on a tour of how her morning used to happen, dropping off the kids at school and walking to work at the power plant. They also talk to several other people around there. They do it in Winter, when apparently it's safest to go through there. It's really great. It comes on Sundance Channel occasionally. His death hit me, too, but in a different way. My co-worker is still active in the ball scene. I also miss going to clubs and watching those queens dance. When I was in Little Rock a few weeks ago, I went to a club and those kids have picked-up right where their predecessors have left off. It was mesmerizing.

132. That's a great film
It is a re-enactment of an actual strike at a zinc mine in New Mexico. The wives and girlfriends of the workers took over the picket line. That film was made during the blacklist era and the production values are shoestring - particularly the sound which is really lo-fi. That is the one film that is most deserving of a remake today with full-scale production values. But the original is a great film anyway

Thanks you guys for having a better memory than me. I've seen it more than once but all over 25 years ago. It was a docudrama. It had actors and stuff but was about something real and done like a documentary.

It's absolutely worth seeing. ...and I obviously need to see it again.

I myself am curious about the Broadway production; I just am not sure how those two can be accurately re-created. And, supposedly, Drew Barrymore is optioning a dramatic re-enactment of the movie, which should be at the very least interesting.

89. Titicut Follies
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titicut_follies

Titicut Follies is a black and white 1967 documentary film by Frederick Wiseman about the treatment of patients at Bridgewater State Hospital in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The title is taken from a talent show put on by the hospital's inmates.

Titicut Follies is widely considered to be a masterpiece of the direct cinema form in documentary film, portraying the existence of occupants of Bridgewater, some of them catatonic, holed up in unlit cells, only periodically washed down with a hose and taken out in order to receive force feeding. It also portrays the indifference and bullying on the part of the institution's staff. As such, it makes an implicit statement about the power of authority and total institutions. The stark black and white photography and unflinching cinéma vérité presentation, make this film a particularly powerful experience.

The film's release was banned (outside of the field of education) in the United States from 1967-1992 by a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that, since it was filmed in a hospital, it violated the patients' rights to privacy. Wiseman, the film's director, however, has pointed out that he received permission from all of the people portrayed in the film or else their legal guardian, in this case the superintendent of Bridgewater. He believes that the Massachusetts Government, feeling concerned that it portrayed a state instiution in a bad light, took the film out of circulation to protect their own reputation. In 1992, it was allowed to be shown on PBS. The film is now legally available through the distributor (Zipporah Films, Inc.), for purchase or rental on VHS or 16mm film for educational license only.

117. It's more of a docu-drama film than a pure documentary.
It won 2 Oscars, and Sharon Stone wasn't in it.

Debuted in 1991, starring Kevin Costner as Jim Garrison, Sissy Spacek as Liz Garrison, Tommy Lee Jones as Clay Shaw/Bertrand, Kevin Bacon as Willie O'Keefe, Gary Oldman as Lee Harvey Oswald, Joe Pesci as David Ferrie and Donald Sutherland as Mr. X.

For pure documentary, I'd have to nominate "Watergate" a five-hour TV documentary directed by Mick Gold, narrated by Daniel Schorr, broadcast Aug. 7, 1994 by the Discovery Channel.

Despite her abhorrent vision of politics, Christianity and American society, I don't think the filmmakers portrayed Becky Fischer in an unflattering light. I almost felt a bit sorry for her because she is just out and out delusional.

Film historian Kevin Brownlow's 13 part series done in the late '70s about silent movies. Many of the pioneers were still around when he made the film.

149. SuperSize Me (.. )
not my favorite exactly, I can't think of which one is right now but I didn't see this listed and it's really good.
I can't call F-9/11 a favorite either, I have it but I'm afraid to watch it because it'll upset me so much :(
