Poll question: U.S. DUers: PENNIES: Remove them from circulation?
I say remove them from circulation. Price things in increments of five cents. Pennies are a pain in the ass.

3. Keep the pennies. Here's why:
Edited on Sun Feb-18-07 10:47 AM by HypnoToad
Total after tax: $3.19

Or if there's no tax on the item: $2.99

Either way, we need pennies. Lots of big, bright, shiny pennies. :D

Of course, if we have a 2 cent piece... :D

Indeed, "Lemme give you my two cents" would have a whole new meaning! :D :D

5. Keep 'em. It would cost too much to rework the old quotes
A nickel saved is a nickel earned

A nickel for your thoughts

Keeps turning up, like a bad nickel

Ever since Britain changed their currency, nobody knows what a Penny-Farthing bicycle is. A true cultural loss.

8. Why not abolish nickels also?
Why not have just a single digit after the decimal point?

10. In the late 60's
my father was stationed in Scotland. U. S. currency was used on base at the Exchange and commissary but pennies were not used. The prices of goods were not altered but when your bill was totaled it was rounded up or down to the nearest nickle mark. Worked fine and dandy and statistically everybody came out even. But I guess I'm being wishy washy on the issue. I don't care if we keep em or not. We throw ours in a big jar and roll them up once a year and give that money to the local SPCA. - Pennies for Puppies.

12. Making that change would probably cause prices to increase
Commodities are often sold, increasing or decreasing by pennies. When someone is buying thousands of tons of something, a few pennies a pound can make a big difference. Depending upon their overhead and labor costs, being charged up to the nearest nickle might cause a big price increase in the final product.

13. Prices per pound can already be quoted to tenths of a cent.

16. Get rid of the pennies!
We didn't have them when I was stationed overseas in the military, and it was nice. Of course, the space in my pockets previously occupied by pennies was more than filled with several varieties of drachma, but watcha gonna do?
