What's strange is that a lot of these people seem to have plenty of money and are successful in other areas of their life, but clueless when it comes to kids.

93. I like the Fox version better.
They go to extremes in finding opposites.
I saw one episode where they couldn't just pick a hippie family. They had to pick a hippie family where the Dad was from France and a pastry chef. The swap was with a family of two marines. It was sick and twisted but in a good way.

101. OMG! i saw the first half of that, but missed the conclusion
yeah, the French guy was a little nutso, but in a fun way. I loved how when he picked up the lady he was dressed about as stereotypically French as you could, and she didn't get it, then when she asked him where he was from and guessed Iraq! Damn. Some funny stuff.

How did it end?

I admit I am addicted to these shows. Did you see the one (last week?) with the crazy aggressive and stupid lady who switched with the lesbian couple and then had (what looked like) a coke-binge freakout and kept calling herself a monster, yet I don't think she ever really "got it" at all. Sad.

99. I wish I knew this last night. I like wife swap sometimes. The Gargoyle
lady made my day. Her name was Marguerite something and I think she did another episode. Anyway, in case you missed and because I hate it when people post things with no information for those not in the know, she was the fundamental Christian whose on air freak out about her non-Christian host family was great entertainment. She even got a rap song made about her.

I can understand if she wants to home school them. But to let them educate themselves based on life experiences?

I mean, the oldest boy's math competency revolves around counting the eggs he brings in every day. I wonder if he even know's what Pi is?

30. I have suspicions about the Iowa bunch
I suspect they are some sort of fundy due to the emphasis on home schooling, not needing education, and the biggie is the stockpiling of food in case of emergency. The kids act like robots.

"Germs are good for you and chemicals are bad for you"!!!
Talk about generalizations. This woman doesn't know about yogurt and buttermilk, which have GOOD buggies in them??? And she doesn't know that SHE is made out of chemicals.

You can get sick from raw food at home and you can get sick from raw food in restaurants. There have been huge class action suits against a restaurant for hepatitis due to eating oysters from uncertified waters.

I got the same vibe from them a couple of times, although the "unschool" brand of homeschooling tends to be more liberal, at least in my experience. (Conservatives who homeschool often do so in the interest of greater regimentation and discipline, rather than less.)

Those poor, poor kids. What are they going to do with their lives when they're grown? That boy needs some serious help, that much I know. He has no ability to relate socially to other people, and he has anger issues to boot.

How do two people this fucking insane find someone just as crazy? One of them must have been normal and got converted to batshitinsane by the other. God damn, I feel bad for the kids living with "team insanity."

46. Now now
I am going to get flamed here, but i have to say that to each his own means we don't call people "batshit crazy" merely because they eat differently than we do.

These people obviously believe they are living a healthy life, so more power to them. And before you go off about raw meat and germs, just remember that if you could see all the nasty crap that goes into your "normal" processed foods that "normal" people eat, you would call those "normal" people batshit crazy, too. Our "normal" food is shit.

Since these people raise their own meat, they probably have healthier raw food to start with. Modern mass-production of meat is what spreads disease through poultry. They probably would not normally eat raw meat from grocery store chicken.

Now, the aversion to bleach was a bit odd, but I have no quarrel with their unschooling or their not bathing every fifteen minutes like many Americans. Again, to each his own.

I just try to remember that we all do "batshit crazy" things in this life, and I try to be tolerant of people who choose to try something different.

But then, some people age beef as well. They just cook it before eating it.

Duck confit. It is delicious. But there is a long process to making it and it is always reheated to make sure (very, very sure) that I kill anything inside of it.

Was the meat just thrown into the jar or was it specially processed?

I started watching the show and I got to the part where each of them started reading each others rules of the house. Then I decided "Hey, you just got the dry heaves four times already. If I stop watching this maybe I won't puke." Then I turned off the TV.

I don't find eating 4 month old beef with "a wang to it" attractive but apparently it won't kill you. So while their food choices are different, they don't seem to be suffering from the problems that people have imagined. So either they are extremely lucky or they know (enough) what they are doing.

67. We don't know they were healthy
They didn't appear to do labs, etc. Raw meat has parasites, raw chicken salmonella, etc. The way they handled their milk was appalling -- and, my uncle had a dairy farm, I know what I'm talking about. You have to be very careful with raw milk. That is NOT a healthy, balanced diet, which every diet should be, no matter what diet a person chooses for themselves (and their poor kids).

They lived in filth. That is never healthy. They are organic, chemical-free cleaners.

And regardless, the mom at least had horrible gums, which is a disease, and can lead to worse dental complications. And, bad dental health=bad body health, especially heart disease.

Plus, living in filth....ick, ick, ick. I cannot imagine subjecting my children to that. Notice how those kids didn't have any friends? I certainly wouldn't let me kids over there.

They're doing a major disservice to their children by raising them like that. Kids don't want to be different.

77. Thanks. I do feel better.
You can always tell when it's food poisoning because it comes on so hard and fast and leaves just as quickly.

The clean house thing is a big deal to kids. TM will actually clean up and start putting stuff away when her friends are coming over, which is fine by me.

We have so many brand new houses in this area, that are of course, spotless, so it's really not fair to the kids to let your house go like that. Hire a friggin' cleaning service fer cryin' out loud.

My friend has a major hoarding problem, but her kids are still little. When they get older, she is gonna have a terrible time with them. There is so much crap from TJ Maxx in her dining room, you can't even get into the room. It's awful. I've been working with her a bit because she's not on the right meds, but she also has a major case of entitlement which virtually eliminates her doing any of the hard stuff.

84. They lived in filth and that is NOT healthy
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 10:59 AM by LostinVA
They have no dental healthy, not even basic brushing with salt or something, which is also unhealthy. You can eb full of parasites for years and not know it.

They'd been eating that diet for about a year. Leaving raw milk in plastic buckets UNCOVERED in a filthy basement next to a makeshift shower isn't healthy. I don't wash my hands, sue anti-bacterial soap alot, and I'm not skeeved out by germs and dirt. But the way they live isn't healthy.

THEY can do whatever they want, but subjecting kids to that IS negligent.

on edit: And, I never aid they were eating salmonella every day. I said they were exposing their minor children to the risk of salmonella, listeria, etc. EVERY DAY. Minors.

85. Not disagreeing with you,
but I just read the manuals for both families (I missed the show). The other one seems almost as nutty ... and what's so healthy about eating take-out pizza and Mexican twice a week and eating out four or five times a week? She doesn't exactly have a handle on good nutrition, although she at least eats/serves cooked food and drinks water. And that woman is so obsessive about bacteria that she overuses disinfectant. She tries to paint a picture that's so perfect that it makes me want to :puke:. She clearly thinks she has it together 100%.

I think this show selects families that are not only direct opposites, but more extreme than the general population. I usually have a hard time deciding which family is nuttier. It sounds like the dirty family is pretty disgusting. She does have some points about toxic chemicals, though, which the other family uses without even thinking of the implications.

BTW, we fed our kids raw milk (it's delicious!). You do have to be careful where you get it from. And we kept it refrigerated. :D

86. I don't pretend to have the answers on how this family lives (or why)
but the scientific method says "any exception disproves the theory."

We all live in a giant petri dish and each person's immune system fights an on-going battle against bacteria and viruses and cancer. People whos' immune systems have the upper hand are considered healthy, while those who are losing the battle are unhealthy. All I am trying to point out is that against our conventional wisdom, this family is not wasting away with diseases. And certainly that milk stuff only intensifies the mystery for me.

87. They were pretty awful
and worthy of the comments they have received here. From the bit I watched that dad seemed like a wannabe cult leader. I saw the part where the dad ate the 4 moth old meat and the son flipped out. It was just sad to think that some kid actually had to grow up in a house with that crazy dad.

But I'm getting tired of the "look and laugh at the stupid white trash" genre of television. I think it has cultivated an ethos of dehumanization of the rural poor. I feel like that's the button that's being pushed by the programming execs when I'm presented with this stuff.

94. Well...
I hate to set myself up for flames (not really) but honestly, I gotta say that a couple of things they were doing aren't so crazy as they may seem at first glance. I didn't see the show, and granted based on what people have said here, they seem to be taking it to extremes... but limiting your exposure to germs actually weakens your immune system. This is not coming from wacko fundie apocalypto sites, but from medical studies.

Also, eating rotten meat has supposedly been used as a technique to rid the body of certain toxins or diseases, I'm not sure which... but anyway it's not so crazy as it sounds, apparently.

100. No flames here.
I missed the episode, but read the manuals and biographies online. Must be our aversion to dirt or something ... because I see the other family as being more than a little obsessed with killing every germ in the house. Oh, and that's usually done using toxic chemicals. And that's OK? What about all those fast food and restaurant meals out? That's healty? And they look incredibly shallow -- having to wear designer clothes, etc. Both families seem pretty extreme, but I'm guessing that people here can relate more to a family that at least cooks their meat, cleans their house, and conforms to a certain perception of success.

I don't have an aversion to dirt either. The manual doesn't depict the sheer filth and neglect in this family. The only math education this boy has really is counting eggs. Their kids were totally socially inept. It was really sad.

The manual doesn't express what was REALLY going on.

112. Perhaps ...
although there have been plenty of filthy and neglectful families on the show before. I mean, I saw one episode where it had dog shit all over the floors.

But I get the willies reading about the "perfect" family that disinfects everything, eats out all the time, and only wears designer clothes. They probably douse themselves with designer fragrances that are made from toxic chemicals, but few people would see that as being nutty.

I'm just saying they usually choose families that are extreme opposites. Neither extreme strikes me as being particularly healthy.

104. I grew up in a dirty house and i have tons of allergies.
I grew up in a house that was not sealed, not air conditioned, had dirt and dust, roaches and rats in it, and my parents smoked, and the town was polluted and stinky. All I did growing up was blow my nose. We had a big long haired house dog.

I had the usual childhood illnesses such as chickenpox.

The food was clean, we took showers and washed the clothes frequently.

After I was grown I got bacterial pneumonia from nonpathogenic bacteria, and had to get my lungs washed out several times so I wouldn't die. This was because of an emotionally abusive nagging husband. I was sick for about five years and wasn't sure if I was going to live. My immune system was completely depressed from the stress of being nagged. I have never smoked and do not drink alcohol either, and do not do illegal drugs.
