Has anybody here ever actually FINISHED Infinite Jest?

I plowed through about 400 pages and gave up when I realized that the next 700 were likely to continue unchanged in tone or pacing.

Was I correct?

it does have a lull there, but it picks back up.

Great book. Loved it.

Mason & Dixon, on the other hand, I am still stuck in the middle of... :P

3. So did the killer videotape
have anything to do with the (alluded to) filmaker character? I was thinking along the lines of the "Types of Light movie in the endnotes) I just wanted to find out what was on the tape--but not quite badly enough to wade through the rest of it!

Can I ask how thouroughly you read the endnotes?

Actually, it's been a couple of years since I gave up, but I have a writer friend and she had never heard of David Foster Wallace, so that's what brought this up.

4. I read the endnotes completely, along with the text...
I will PM you with the answers, don't want to ruin it for anyone who might be reading it or who might want to. :)

6. My pleasure!
Are you a writer too? Done any more writing about your paddling adventures?

8. Ooh, nice memory!
I'm solid in proffesional communication, and am kind of an essayist when I send emails, but don't actually just "write" much.

I'd like to of course, but it's (if I can borrow a line from "Throw Momma from the Train") I'm the kinda guy who never DOES anything!

I'm always afraid I'll slip over the line from elegance to opulence and start sounding like a hack detective story--with all the gratuitous adjectives and what not.

Thanks for the (implied) compliment! :)

2. not me
it was a book club assignment a few years ago. After about 50 pages, I threw the book in the garbage. Literally.

7. Yup. Great book.
I skipped over most of the science and just concentrated on the narrative....Loved it.
