All my Koi died this winter yet all the goldfish lived

I have an outside pond that freezes over in December and January. For two years all the fish survived, but this year all four Koi died but not one goldfish?

Anyone have any thoughts on what might have done in the Koi and what I could do next year to help them survive the winter?

4. Why bother questioning them? I should just put them in Guantanamo Bay

off the coast of Cuba and torture the hell out of them! The suspicion is enough for the torture.
