Is the Glam Rock Sound making a comeback?
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 01:55 AM by JCMach1
A number of recent songs I have heard could have come straight from T-Rex. Specifically, Kasabian 'Shoot the Runner' is the main song I am thinking of...

But, I have noticed the trend recently...

What's up with that? Or, am I hallucinating?

2. Yes. I think that sound has been "coming back" for a couple
of years now.

The other new "retro" sounds I'm hearing are neo-Prog Rock and kind of a late '60's blues based rock sound kind of touched on by bands like The White Stripes.

I LOVED T-Rex, The New York Dolls, etc., so I'm very happy to hear that sound again. :bounce:

3. neo-Prog Rock: Mars Volta is one of my kids faves!
When I played Yessongs and Triumvirat's Spartacus for her she saw no connection...go figure.

11. One of my kids is listening to Pink Floyd....
Makes me appreciate IPods, since I didn't like them the first time around, much less now.

I must admit that I prefer Rock with the original rebellious energy, whether that comes out sexy, angry, youthful, danceable or even artsy. To me Prog-rock took itself too seriously, was trying to be intellectual and just ended up being pompous at best, and bloated, at worst.

But, it is good to have a variety of Rock sounds back.... :toast:

5. The Fratellis as well
They have the big "Glam Rock" sound too. The definitly grew up listening to their parents Bay City Rollers ablums anyway.

6. loved t-rex!
For me glam rock of the 80s is the off spring of the ziggy stardust era of the 70s.

which i was also big on.

7. The new Belle and Sebastian, of all things, nods heavily towards glam.
Check out their tune "The Blues Are Still Blue," it has that T. Rex strut all over it.

13. I'll have to check that out....
I hear Belle and Sebastian quite often on the radio, but haven't bought a CD yet. Sometimes, they strike me as being too mellow or folky (Horrors!...:+ ), however, I have heard fairly recent songs that I've liked.

Thanks for the tip!

9. This cockrocker loves him some glam-rock

This is my favorite contemporary glam-rock band, all though that is only true on certain songs and a couple of them are too T.Rex even for their own good.

10. Yes, the vocals in particular sound like T-Rex...
I like it.

Although, I think a flamboyant presentation was part of the fun of glam. Those guys look like generic boring prog-rock types.

Thanks for posting the link, Izzybeans!

12. Yeah you will find very little rock n' roll spectacle these days
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 01:22 PM by izzybeans
It's been parodied into oblivion. I don't think bands today believe they can pull it off without turning into a novelty or a comedy rock band, which is even worse.

17. I think this Kristoffer Ragnstam song sounds a little like glam.
More toward the Elton John version of it though.

The man himself, though, seems to dress in a much more subdued manner.
