I cannot stop thinking about Lakisha Jones
For those who don't watch American Idol (and please if you don't just leave us alone who do) you will know her name eventually.

For those who do: was she not the best that has ever been on? I haven't been this blown away by someone in a long time. I voted for her a dozen or so times and I never ever vote. I really want her to win, not because this show is the most important thing ever in the history of the world. I want her to win because I want to hear that voice every week for the next 3 months. I want her to win so I can have that voice in my headphones. I want her to win so I can gladly pay money to hear that voice in person.

She gave me chills. She got me choked up. She should be a superstar.

But she isn't MTV ready. She's fat. In this shallow world that gives Hillary Duff, Lindsey Lohan, and Paris Hilton record contracts Lakisha is making change at the bank. That's what makes American Idol great. It's a way of sticking it to the man, beating the system. It's a way around all of the packaged commericialized bullshit (ok it's a lot of that too) that too often filters out talent for style.

I don't want fat haters to decide who I can listen to. Googling her name today made me feel better because a lot of people are saying the same thing. Youtube even has her clip if anyone wants to hear what I am talking about.

All I gotta say is GO LAKISHA!

1. She was tres good -- and has a good backstory
African American women can get away with it more than white women -- although I do fear that's changing a bit.

And, I think maybe Melinda Doolittle was better last night.

2. Melinda was my second favorite
But only by a little. They were, with a few other girls, were the only ones ready for recording last night. EVeryone else looked like amateurs at a good Karaoke bar. Melinda and Lakisha look like professionals.

How odd that they carry themselves with the least confidence? I keep asking Melinda through my TV screen, "How do you not know you are phenomenonal?" She holds her shoulders high as if to hide and I just want to shake her until she gets just how special she is.

I really hope it comes down to the two of them. Then it would truly be about talent.

high note and Simon said she didn't. She's got red streaks in her hair.

10. She hit it
It was a TEENY bit sharp maybe, but she made the note.

I liked her, too. She's the top of the second tier, behind Lakisha and Melinda.

52. I don't think Gina hit the note.
The two big notes of that Celine Dion song she sang came across as yelling at points, and seemed a bit flat too. I recorded the episode on DVR and watched her performance more than once. I liked her performance, but I think she picked a song she wasn't quite capable of nailing.

Lakisha, on the other hand, was perfect for her entire performance. Probably the best performance I've heard on Idol.

9. Melinda is/was someone's backup singer
I loathed Jennifer Hudson because of her arrogance -- although I'm rooting for her to win the Oscar. Then, you have this woman who is FANTASTIC, and has low self confidence.

AI leads to alot of things: Broadway, movies, etc. I suspect she'll do quite well.

(a secret: Haruka know totally loves AI.)

6. That's good
I called later thanks to Tivo watching around 11:30 or so est. I started dialing while she was singing and then hit redial until I was too pha-klempt to continue.

I was worried about the lack of busy signal but more reassured by what I read online today. Sometimes people that seem like sure-things don't get enough votes because people feel that they don't have to call.

Like I said, it's all selfish for me. I want to hear her sing period.

Although I did like the first single, but the rest was painfully not best suited for her vocal style. Whoever wrote that album should be tarred, feathered, and chased from the industry. I called for her every single week. Now, I'm kind of sorry that I did because she got hedged into a sucky album contract.

OMG!! She has a new song out on the charts. Go listen to it!! It will start when her page loads.

Her friend really seemed to be the Mean One, she always struck me as kinda sweet. I'm from Jersey and spent a lot of time in Pt. Pleasant so it was a lil fun to follow her for a bit. Though she has sung some pretty notes in the auditions she was clearly out of her league last night.

Weren't her parents like, creepy attractive? Like more siblings to her or older cousins?

18. I've actually missed most of AI this year.
Thanks for the video, though. She had my body covered in chill bumps. She has an amazing set of pipes on her. She's got the voice of Aretha and the moves of Tina Turner. Love it!

And what the hell; she's fat?! :wtf: I'm guessing you don't think or feel that way, but it was confusing at first. I had to read it twice. (I'm having a slow day I guess) I don't really think her weight matters all that much in light of her talent. The problem with Duff, Lohan, and Hilton is they have no talent. The only thing they have to rely on is looks. Lakisha could be an old wrinkly 80 year old woman singing in smoky jazz clubs. All the others will probably be dead from silicone poisoning or be pumped full of preservatives. Some people are just meant to have shape to them especially when they have had a baby. She's real and talented and I think that people will buy her for that reason alone. I mean, did you ever notice how before the age of video that not everyone in a band was all that good looking? But, damn, could they play the hell out of their instrument! Most bands suck now because they only recruit from the pool of "Beautiful People". It's :puke: but true.

29. Lakisha followed the advice I've heard big beautiful jazz vocalists use:
"If you can't hide it, decorate it."

Honestly, I was quite impressed by her. Her manner is so quiet and sweet, and yet when she moved around the stage she was mesmerizing. Good for her for wearing a shiny red and gold dress! She's a natural knockout, IMO.

1.) When Paula isn't whacked out on god knows what pills, she is a really, really good judge -- by far the best.

2.) When Paula is whacked out on god knows what pills, it is both very, very entertaining and quite horrifying -- like watching AI AND an episode of ER at the same time.

51. I never could stand Paula...
It was the whole notion that she could sing. Her range was about a 5th...She never had the instrument. The only reason she became successful was the fact that she was pretty and could do some dance moves. Since America was in the age of the video, it didn't matter that she didn't have much of a voice.

Having not watched the show, I couldn't say for sure; but I have a feeling there are a lot of AI rejects that have more talent than she ever did.
