My THAC0 is an irrational number in the imaginary plane. What's yours?
-(sqrt(2))*(number of level 1 thieves trying to steal an oil pack or bullseye lantern or dart or whatever the fuck they can manage from their quest-mates' rucksacks in a 100 mile radius area) - j * ln(number of copper pieces hidden in Dick Cheney's codpiece today - number of hexes you have to go back to find a blacksmith who can fix your armor after you stupidly sat on a rust monster because you were tired because you were just sure, you were just fucking sure, weren't you, yeah, you were just fucking sure you could go head-to-head in a psionic battle with a Mind Flayer, you fool, and then ran into a room of Ropers because you were in such a fucking hurry to get away)

11. Oooh... economics!
Not the kind of math that I did, except in my econ. class that was taught by an insane guy who wrote test questions that would variously be absent of a noun, verbs, or just be sentence fragments, such as "True or False: If the prime rate is at 1.75% then banks."

But, I learned some working at an ivestment bank. I like CAGR. That's a cool function!

5. This is why 3rd ed/3.5 is so nice
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 11:21 PM by JonathanChance
Just base attack bonus plus your STR (or DEX if ranged) modifiers + the d20 roll. Meet or exceed, your target's AC or roll a nat 20, (Ecxept opponents immune to crits, of course) you hit.

None of this complex THAC0 rubbish.

12. Nadir that flame flingin fatuous fearfully frank frayer of fortitutude, that...
flaccid foreshadowed freak failure, framed for fundemental frigidity, he wishes woefully, wondering what wicked world will wind a way into his hellacious horrors, hellbent horrific hours of heartless hanging in the negativity of the narrow nights of noxious nadirs, all fire flagrantly whipped into notions of nadir's not now whipped wishfulness of wrongs

9. Thaco
is different for each creature/person you come across dependning on their armor, or other defense enchantments, or magical items. My usual armor class was around 2....

10. No it isn't. It's a constant across all enemies.
If one has magical enhancements, then those do adjust the THAC0, yes, but it still gives one a THAC0 that is the same against all opponents.

15. Not across the board though
Edited on Fri Feb-23-07 01:20 AM by petersond
Giants, Minotaurs and some other creatures have actual armor classes, even in the buck. Even elves with higher dex, have a different AC, so thaco across the board isnt' even (unless there has been some massive rule change).

on edit:so thaco changes, depending on which creature/person you are fighting.

on edit II:spelling

17. No, the whole reason for THAC0 was to get rid of having to do all the math
all the time.

THAC0 never changes unless one gets a new weapon, adds magic, gains or loses dexterity, etc.

The actual number one needs to roll changes depending on a person's armor class, but the THAC0 stays the same.

So, if my THAC0 is 10, and I'm using a sword+2, and someone has armor class 9, I need only roll a 1. If their armor class is -5, then I need to roll a 15. But my THAC0 in both cases is still 10. If I drop my sword, it becomes 12.

I think I picked up a sweet black die that extends into two additional dimensions. That might work.
