Does this colossal squid give anyone else the creeps?
New Zealand fishermen caught it near the Antarctic:

It reminds me too much of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

17. Makes me hungry too, but you can't pull that off.
Large squids like that develop high levels of ammonia in their flesh in order to stay buoyant. Eating calamari made from that squid would be like eating bathroom cleaner.

2. It bothers me because it means man is fishing deeper than ever.
How long does it take a giant squid to mature sexually? How many are there? Two have been killed recently, how will that affect the population? What about whatever is hauled up from that depth?

I nevcer thought it possible that we could kill the oceans until just last year. The ocean populations are gonna crash.

5. I'm sort of sad the giant squid is no longer a somewhat mythical beast.
Until just recently, giant squids were the stuff of legends, fueled by a stray tentacle here and there and huge sucker marks on sperm whales. Now they are of this world, so to speak, and it sort of makes me melancholy.

No one should have to share billing with Carrot Top.

One is a bottom-dwelling, vengeful monster, leaving a swath of death and destruction in the wake of its slimy, murderous arms. The other is a large cephalopod.

19. They were showing giant squid on Olbermann, tonight.
They give me the creeps, too, and that's saying something. I have no problem with spiders or snakes, but these are definitely creepy.:scared:

26. I read somewhere that the squid was so big
that calamari rings, if made, would be as big as semi tires.

30. I heard that too but
...judging from the photo this sounds a bit exagerated... maybe squid-rings about the size of those wimpy looking spare tires.
