Drunk Man Guilty Of Letting Drunk 14 Year Old Drive
<snip>

HANOVER, Va. -- A Virginia man who allowed his 14-year-old son to drive after both had been drinking has pleaded guilty to felony child neglect.

James Vernon Holbert Jr. faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced in May.

Hanover County prosecutors said Holbert told police he'd been drinking too much, so he allowed his son to drive -- even though the 14-year-old had also been drinking alcohol that Holbert provided.

The car veered off a road in Ashland last June and struck a tree, ejecting the boy. He was treated at the scene.

The teen was charged with driving without a license and driving after illegal consumption of alcohol, both misdemeanors.

5. Long ago i actually had a cop make me drive home at 14.
Every person except myself in the car was bombed beyond compare. The cop asked me if i could drive. Being a country boy i sure could having driven tractors and truck since i was 8. he followed us home, and told us if he saw us again anywhere that night we were going to jail. Pretty fair i thought.

24. Driving age should be fourteen, anyway.
Drinking age should be fourteen, too. The two together--not such a good thing.

26. I drove at fourteen (fifteen was legal), and wish I could let my kid drive at 14
which is a couple of months away.

If you raise the age to 21, then 21 year old drivers will suck. It's not age, it's experience that teaches people how to drive. Same with drinking. We take away all opportunities for kids to actually practice responsibility and then wonder why kids can't practice responsibility.

27. THe problem is, at least here, it is so friggin' congested
way more congested than when I was learning to drive. I worry about her on the road because she drives a Camry I bought her, but some of the local soccer moms drive these enormous SUVs and can't see her.

It's just scary having your kid behind the wheel, or sitting in the passenger seat of a new driver.

Although, I do like having her run errands for me. It helps a lot.
