Friday Afternoon Questions: Why are you lucky? What are the good things in your life?
1. i have the most wonderful woman in my life.

2. i am in a good graduate school program and even if my fellow students are a bit yuppified for my tastes, i think it will all work out in the end.

3. i have loyal friends whom i adore.

4. i have a well paying job while i go to grad school. my boss loves me. and even if its isnt the job of my dreams, it certainly nice to work in a place where one is valued and trusted.

5. even my mother is getting around to accepting her gay daughter. she invited Rockit to dinner and thinks Rockit is a nice person. my brother loves rockit. all my friends who have met her like her. its nice to have their support.

6. my cat is wonderful.

This place has gotten a bit negative in the last few days for me. I would like you guys to tell me about the positive aspects of your life.

1. OK.
I think that's a good idea, so I'll try ...

1. I'm married to the most wonderful man in the universe for 30 years and counting.

2. I have two wonderful daughters, two sons-in-law, and a fabulous grandson.

3. I have great friends ... even if some of them do live across the ocean.

4. My cats and dogs adore me, even when I make mistakes. I'm having a little trouble typing because one of the kitties is lying across my arms.

5. We're building a fabulous house on a beautiful piece of property out in the country, but 10 minutes from town.

6. We can still pay our bills ... so far.

Thanks, lioness.

8. That's why
I'm glad you reminded me to look at the positive things. Even the kitty ... she is so insistent upon getting her cuddle that she doesn't feel rejected if I put her down. She just jumps again and gives me that "You didn't mean to do that" look. Well, sometimes I DID mean to do that because I'm working on paying bills or something and she gets in the way. But she loves me anyway and comes back and lies down across my arms. Can't beat that.

3. I miraculously dodged the gaping pit of personal and financial ruin...
by a chain of events so insanely improbable that it makes winning at one slot machine 500 times in a row seem almost everyday.

And no, I wont elaborate for fear of tempting fate (an odd thing for a rational atheist like me to say, but dammit, I was lucky and I'm not willing to take risk on this one issue).

12. Mine
1) I have relatively good health. At times, I have the aches and pains of getting older, but that's to be expected

2) I have some truly terrific friends

3) I have the best, loving family in the world.

4) I have a job, I have a roof over my head. There are some suffering people out there who can't say that.

5) And...I have the most amazing, smart, wonderful, special man in my life. Who I dearly love more and more each day.

13. Things are great for sure.
While my life has been a hard row too hoe i'm happy. Things did not start well, but it's been good for sometime.

#1 I have 4 wonderful kids, who all did much better than i. My oldest son owns and runs his own diesel mechanic shop. My oldest girl is going to college. My youngest girl is an honor role student. My youngest bot, the toddler is a mess but i still love him.

#2 Great supportive women without who my life would slip off into the abyss. Strong, smart and always willing to tell me whats what.

#3 Realizing that all the bad shit that happened has led me to this point. So despite any hardship or pain it made me who and what i am today, and i wouldn't change that for anything.

#4 I owe not one thin dime.

In some ways my life may not have turned out as i like, but thats life. The good things i have are of far greater value than the things i have lost. By far i would rather have what i have now than any other brass ring i reached for.

Life is good.:toast:

22. I do
Making the dough can be difficult. YOu have to make sure that when you mix the water, sugar, and yeast together that the water is about the temp of bath water. If it is too hot or too cold the yeast dies and your dough doesn't rise.

But to carmelize the onions, you have to mix the onions with olive oil over medium heat for 30 minutes stirring it often. After they soften and start to brown, you turn up the heat to medium high heat and cook for another 25-30 minutes stirring often until they are nice and brown. Add garlic (the more the better in my book), cup of white wine, and cooked sausage. turn up the heat to high and cook until the wine is reduced (doesn't take long).

Put Mozzerella cheese on your dough, the onions and sausage, and then fontina cheese and I cook it either on preheated pizza tiles that I have or lately on the BBQ grill. If I do it on the grill I cook the dough first.

I'm experiencing it without any out-of-the-ordinary hardship. I have a devoted wife (and kids) whom I love. Being naturally (and unapologetically) lazy, I'd rather not work, but I'm lucky to have a pretty good job. I was (luckily!) born with a natural ability to play the guitar.

21. buying our house was the luckiest thing we did.
11 years ago we paid 130K for a decent two-flat that needed some work. we did the work, the city built a new high school in the neighborhood that became the top school in the city, and now we're poised to sell it for well over 3 times what we paid for it.

:hi: I'm lucky because I am in excellent health and in great shape. I'm happy with who I am and appreciate everyone around me. Like you, I'm happy to be in a job where I am appreciated and valued for my contributions.

I have two dogs who adore me and a husband who loves me despite the ongoing problems we have. Both of my parents are living and we are on excellent terms, and my brother and sister are very close to me as well. I have a few really good friends, and I value them more than I can say. :)

25. I have great parents, and some good friends, too.
As I had mentioned last week on DU, we had sold our home only to have the buyers back out 10 days before we closed on our new home. They basically have forfeited their deposit, but our incompetent agent only got a token deposit. So, they lose a bit of money, but we have to endure a lot of stress.

We had planned to use the money from the sale of that house for part of the down payment on the new house... but, now that plan was shot because our current home was no longer being sold.

So, we were faced with the option of carrying two mortgages, plus getting a bridge loan for the additional down payment on the new house. While we were approved for the bridge loan, it would have really strained us financially... we couldn't back out of the purchase because we had already put down almost $50,000.

However, my parents offered to give us the money we would have gotten via the bridge loan ($90,000) as a temporary loan until we can sell our current home. Considering my parents never went to college, they've done pretty well for themselves with money if they can come up with $90K in 24 hours!

And, when my wife was talking to a friend of hers, the friend also offered money to help out as well. Thankfully, we don't need it now.

39. It sucks. It is one the most heinous forms of music ever created.
To my ears, anyway. But then I spent five years with it being forced upon me, at extreme volume, at all hours of the day, so I'll never like it. It still gives me flashbacks to years of suffering and pain whenever I hear it.

The old salsa is pretty good stuff, but this new shit - it's just awful sounding pure garbage.

40. I'm thinking of the older stuff, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon ....
but the newer stuff isn't really salsa, more like hyper-merengue, more simplistic, loud, and obnoxious.

42. That's it exactly! hyper-merengue! YES!
And definitely simplistic, loud, and obnoxious.

I listen to the old stuff (which is only accidentally, since I don't own any) and I think, "Wow - that is soooooo good. It's too bad the new stuff is such crap".

The Dominican neighborhood I lived in was pretty much 99% the new crap at 500 decibels all goddamn day, but there was one guy a few buildings over who had some of the old stuff on vinyl, and when he blasted that for the entire neighborhood it was still obnoxious and utterly inhuman, but at least the music was compelling and interesting - so subtle, so beautiful... wonderful singing, melodious, warm. Not like the new shit at all.

43. Juan Luis Guerra is the best, for the real merengue.
A Cuban friend sent me a compilation of his albums in the early '90s. The tape stayed in the deck in my car for about three months,it was so good and so complex. A great, great artist. Bachata Rose is one of his great albums. There are some videos of his stuff on youtube, too.

The same thing happened to soca music from Trinidad; it went simple and into hyperspeed. Ruined it, IMHO. Soca from the '80s is much better than later stuff.

48. Here goes
Edited on Fri Feb-23-07 06:46 PM by GenDem
1. I've been married to my best friend for 28 years.

2. I have three grown kids, that I love dearly. Two boys and an absolutely beautiful 19 year old daughter. Oldest son is in graduate school in Fl, middle is a union electrician, and daughter is in her first year of college and plays on the volleyball team. We love to go to volleyball tournaments.

3. I have been very lucky in my career, even though I don't make much money. I started a small business as a free-lance artist when my daughter was a baby -- I wanted a way to stay home with her. I started doing house portraits. It expanded into so much more. Now I teach at a Catholic school, community center, senior citizen center, retirement community, and my favorite -- the local Mental Health Association. At almost all of these jobs I paint and draw pictures pretty much all day. That's fun, for me. Sometimes I am too busy, but I'm glad I'm working doing my art.

4. My mother and father are still alive and relatively well, as is my MIL.

5. Last spring my sister, my brother, and I bought a small lake cottage that we all share and love. It is very affordable sharing the expenses among the three of us, and it is big enough for all of us to be there together.

6. I have wonderful friends.

7. I'm active with my local political party, and love my fellow Democratic party members. We're having a big fundraiser tomorrow night -- a Valentine's dance.

8. On edit -- I FORGOT MY PETS. I have two Schipperkes and a cat that I love to pieces.

Thanks, Pri!

51. Funny you should ask....
I was just thinking about all the bad things that have happened lately. Now it is time to focus on the positive.

Why are you lucky? I'm not sure that I am lucky. I have been very fortunate, but that is different. I don't know why some people are lucky and others are plagued with bad luck. It is one of life's great mysteries, I guess.

What are the good things in your life? There are so many. I have been blessed with a wonderful, loving family. I have a wonderful husband and two extraordinary children, and a beautiful daughter-in-law. We are all healthy, Thank God. And, I share a home with two of the the world's cutest and smartest dogs. I have a couple of really good friends to share life's ups and downs with. I have a rewarding career, an excellent education, and every material object I could ever want.

I haven't noticed DU being negative... maybe I have just skipped over those posts. Thanks for the uplifting topic, lioness. Have a joyful weekend!

52. What a great idea for a thread
1) I have a roof over my head, food in my kitchen and live in relative safety. Which is something that many people in this world don't have, so I'd say I'm fortunate in that respect.

2) I have my health

3) I have a great bunch of friends, they may be scattered all over the country right now but we all try to keep in touch.

4) I was able to have a good education including earning a college degree

5) I have everything I need in this world and there are very, very, few things that I don't have and actually want.

56. Great idea for a thread
I've been staying away because of all the negativity. Just lurking here and there.

Positive aspects of my life? A tremendous family...the best mom and dad and sis anyone could have.

I live in a beautiful place. Right on the water between the Gulf and the ocean.

As the saying goes: if you're lucky enough to live on an island, you're lucky enough.

So, I'm pretty lucky since I've lived on one for more than 20 years.

I have great friends and wonderful critters who share my life. Though no longer involved with an SO -DAMN, but I had some good times there too! Friends still with all of my exes. A good thing.

Today I saw two Key deer (miniature deer that live in the Keys).Tomorrow I'm going to get up early and go run a race on No Name Key, in benefit for the Domestic Abuse Shelter here. No doubt I'll see some more Key deer and other wildlife.

Life is good.
