2. Bonehead plays the trombone
and he wants to major in music education. He's auditioning for LSU, UNC Greeley and University of Colorado.

At least I think it's UC. The one in Ft. Collins. I get 'em confused: UC, CU, UNC, USC, UCCS...

3. UC is a good music school
im not familiar with the others. A good friend of mine majored in Music Performance at Denver Univeristy, just down the road from there.

And a good choice to go into music education rather than performance. A much more useful degree, as it can be used as a basis for teaching in many other fields as well.
Just a warning, that high school band director jobs are few and far between. I knew many musicians in the Army Band who had music education degrees and could not get a band director job.
But if he has the drive for it, and is willing to be flexible about his teaching prospects, its a great area to get into.

4. I've warned him of the same thing
Pointed out that while a school might have several history or math teachers...or elementary teachers...or whatever...there's only one band director. And that, sad as it is, music programs are usually the first to go when the budget's on the line.

His first choice is LSU...but I have to confess, I'd prefer Greeley. 1. It's closer to home (yeah, that pesky ol' 'mom' thing), and 2. In-state tuition.

5. at least with the education degree
he will get lots of classes in education and childhood development. If he decides that he would rather be an English or Math teacher (as its easier to find a job), its only a couple more classes and certifications. And if he wants to volunteer to help out during marching band season, even better.
