'NYT' SUNDAY PREVIEW: Suze Orman Reveals She is the '55-year-old Virgin'

By E&P Staff

Published: February 23, 2007 2:20 PM ET

NEW YORK In an interview for The New York Times Magazine this coming Sunday, financial guru and TV host Suze Orman gets on Deborah Solomon's case for not looking out for her own money, partly because "you are a woman." This inspires Solomon to ask Orman if she is married.

Orman says she "has a relationship with life," so Solomon presses her, and Suze then reveals that her "life partner" is Kathy Travis and, "We're going on seven years. I have never been with a man in my whole life. I'm still a 55-year-old virgin."

1. the real story:
Discrimination vs. gays:

"Orman says they'd like to get married, and both "have millions of dollars in our name. It's killing me that upon my death, K.T. is going to lose 50 percent of everything I have to estate taxes. Or vice versa."

Well, at least this sensationalism will get people to read the article, lol.

4. She's a rather well known financial expert. You're some random dude on the internet.

I think we can safely assume she knows more about the legalities that effect her finances than you do.

17. Perhaps....
But I have been an accountant for 25 years....

First of all, not everything she owns is going to be taxed so right off the bat that statement is false...

Besides, she writes self help books and does talk shows...

That doesn't make her an expert on anything...

But hey, believe what ever you wish to believe...

Some random dude on the internet...

5. she said estate taxes
not estate. And Suze Orman knows her stuff, so I wouldn't argue with her on that. With the money they have anything is possible.

16. She said 50 percent of everything to Estate Taxes....
That's crap....

I'm an accountant...

She has an agenda to get rid of the estate tax....

18. most people with that kind of money do
but I think what she is saying is that if she were allowed to legally marry she would not lose as much to estate taxes. Fair is fair, regardless of any agenda she may or may not have.

19. Perhaps....
But not fifty percent...

And if she is such a great guru, she would be able to shield her Estate through gifts to foundations...

I have nothing against her per se, it's just that the advice she dishes tends to be rehashed conventional wisdom, bits of tips that can be gleemed from any issue of Money Magazine...

That's all...

One thing I have to say, she has created a celebrity of herself and in this day and age, that seems to be all that matters...

21. in all it would be a quarter of their estate combined
as I understand it.

I took a wills and estates class and it was just page after page after page of tax shelters that boggled my mind, so it seems to me that yes it is fairly easy for the rich to shelter their money from taxes. But the benefits of legal marriage outweigh that and that is a relevant issue for gay people who can't marry.

She really filled a void because she reaches out to women like me who know nothing about managing money at all. It would never occur to me to pick up a Money Magazine because I would just assume I'm too stupid to understand what is in there. I think some of her advice goes against the grain, like paying off your mortgage before you invest in the stock market and stuff like that where other people might advise differently so that they can make a buck. Her advice seems to be tailored for work-a-day people more than for those with money to lose in the stock market, which I appreciate. She also helps alot of couples work through their money issues on her show.

6. oh the bitter bickersons are starting in on another thread.
they're bitching cause she used the word proud -- i.e proud of being gay -- or they're bitter cause she came out so late.

everything except the two main messages -- women look after your own money and gay folk not being able to marry is damaging.

9. I feel stupid because I never knew
other people are saying they had her pegged and I never even thought about it. She is so empowering for women on that show (primarily straight women, I might add) to watch their finances and take care of themselves financially. I adore her. That is cool she said 'proud'. Go Suze! :bounce:

11. and that's the point -- it's a FEMINIST issue!
it's part of the maturing process for women being independant -- and that's all.
both sexes can use her advise -- but for years money management was dominated by men and then here comes suze.

and she has a way of communicating that appeals to women.

15. oh honey
I love it. She was talking about FICO information one time (I didn't even know what a FICO score was til I started watching her show) and she went off on financial advisors that were contradicting the info she was giving out and she just finally said "Look. I am RIGHT and THEY are WRONG." You could tell what she was saying was that these guys were saying she didn't know jack because she was a woman. She is the bomb. :)

7. that is how I feel
I've been watching her show for years, I used to have her book when it first came out, and I never even thought for a moment she was gay. I'm really happy she felt comfortable enough to come out. I guess when you have that kind of money you are set.

another :woohoo:
