Back in '92 I flew on airplane under an assumed name.
I was going to Yellowstone and I found an airline ticket in the paper for $169. A name different from mine was on the ticket and I made it the whole way. I flew from Richmond to Idaho Falls. I didn't show my ID once and there was even a time when the stewardess checked the the passenger manifest and I simple told her my name was the name on the ticket. She took my word at face value. Couldn't do that today. Strange times we are living in.

1. I also have a confession to make: I post on the internet under an assumed name
I like the new rules of air travel though. We may never have universal health care in this country, but on the other hand it's like you get a free colonoscopy every time you travel, so you don't miss the regular medical exams so much.

2. I got stuck in Canada for doing that.

A bunch of "the guys" made a trip to Montreal for a weekend bachelor party in the city's infamous strip clubs. One guy had to cancel, but already had his non-cancelable ticket, so I bought it off him. I mean...it was only Canada! No passport, just driver's license and birth cert, and back then no one checked ID's just for boarding the plane. We had a great time in Montreal, and when I finally dragged my tired, hung over ass to the airport, everything was going smoothly, made it through the first checkpoint, checked in, and as I was about to leave the customs desk the woman smiled at me, her stamp hovering over my boarding pass, and said "Have a nice flight, Mr..." waiting for my response. Holy shit! Was she looking for MY name, which was on my documents, or the name on my ticket? I stammered out Marty's name, but even got that wrong, then tried to switch -- "Er, no, I mean..." SLAM, the reject stamp camp down. Not that it would have mattered what name I said, I guess, she had everything right in front of her. I was removed from line, and my ticket revoked. Next flight to Boston was in fourteen hours, and I had to purchase an entirely new ticket. My brother and his buddies laughed and waved as they boarded the plane.

5. brought to you first
by that wonderful Reagan administration who deregulated the airlines. They never gave a damn who flew on a ticket before Ronnie screwed us all. Admittedly the patriot act has contributed to the mess but it was that paragon of a president who started it.

6. When I was a travel consultant, you could still buy "open tickets"
kind of a "blank check" ticket.. fill in the name /destination/date later sort of a thing..

And people were RARELY , if EVER, asked for ID..

We were a different society back then.. just 30 years ago.. :(

Many a "wife" who traveled , was NOT a wife

8. My Navy buddy use to buy my tickets
This was the early 70s. My hair wasn't regulation length and I was often given a second look, but I always made the flight. Of course this was standby, but the military discount was a considerable savings.

10. we trade a little more each day...
if you watch films from the seventies, one of the things that always strikes me is the amount of freedom and personal privacy that existed. If you go back further, the freedoms are once again increased.

We've traded away life and liberty for a police state. :-(
