If you were to think of someone who sees the world in terms of 'black and white,' who would you think of? For me, people like George W. Bush come to mind. Their worlds are neatly organized into 'right/wrong,' 'good/evil,' 'tasty/not tasty,' with no room left in-between for those lovely shades of grey. I don't necessarily see it as a favorable characteristic, since our country is being run at this point by people who see the world in such narrow terms. Unfortunately, I've seen more than a few people on DU who see the world in terms like this. I think that's part of the reason that we have so much in-fighting. I think healthy debate is one thing, but I also think that oftentimes, we get out of hand. I mean, seeing so many threads getting locked, deleted messages, even tombstones, over things that are often pretty stupid...it gets discouraging. Here are some examples of 'absolutist' thought on DU. Remember your old favorites! Collect them all! 'All celebrities/rich people are horrible people and should die a bloody death.' 'All religious people/atheists are stupid/deluded/fooling themselves.' 'Cantidate A is the best/worst! I love/hate A and will fight you to the death and scream insults at you if you disagree with me in the slightest!' 'All conspiracy theories are dumb/true.' 'Celebrity/political figure B just died. Let's all bash on celebrity/political figure B!!!!' Anyone else have any favorites?
There are many other examples, naturally. The problem is...our primaries are coming up quickly. Considering how ugly things are already getting, I worry about us getting too worked up and angry at each other. Can't we all just get along? Oh yeah, and the 'when I think of A, I think of _____' threads are getting really old, kay? I mean, I know all y'all are full of yourselves, but do you need to be so OBVIOUS about it? ;)
