Years ago, I lived with a chef. Once, when I came down with an awful flu/cold, I was too poor to go to the doctor. My friend made this soup for me and I was well withing three days. The soup does not actually contain penicillin but this is the name he gave to this recipe. Over the years, whenever I or my child have gotten sick, I have made this soup. It always works. I share it with you now:
Penicillin Soup:
Ingredients:
Chicken on the bone (I usually buy a six-pack of drumsticks) 1-2 bunches of Fresh Turnip Greens (Mustard Greens or Collard Greens work just as well) Assorted fresh vegetables (your choice) Seasoning (your choice) A big pot A lot of water
Preparation:
1) Fill a large pot with a lot of water and bring the water to boil 2) Drop the raw chicken into the pot and boil until chicken is firm 3) Remove chicken from the pot 4) Remove meat from the bones and set aside 5) Crack the bones and drop them back into the boiling water. 6) Boil the bones for at least 20 minutes 7) Remove bones from the water and give to kitty 8) Return chicken to the pot and reduce heat to medium low 9) Add fresh vegetables in order of how long it takes to cook them, add the fresh (cleaned and cut) Turnip Greens to the pot 10) Cover and simmer for another 20 minutes 11) Season to taste
Recommended serving:
A) Eat at least one cup of the soup every four hours.
B) Continue to eat soup until there is no more soup
C) Feel better
