Poll question: Best American crime flick? (poll)
I stuck to last 40 years or so. I see Taxi Driver more as a psychological drama, so I left it out. Godfather 3 sucks, IMO, so it's out also.

I added "Other" and dropped Bugsy, so feel free to vote for something else!

Fahrenheit 9/11

Syriana

Reefer Madness

5. They are certainly notable crime films.
But you're right, they are about different, in most cases far more insidious, kinds of crime!

57. Me too. "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" Beatty and Dunaway, the most
attractive couple ever on screen (hell, that'd be a good poll question),great supporting cast - Gene Hackman,Michael J. Pollard,Denver Pyle,Gene Wilder, and Estelle Parsons, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Yeah,it was definitely an all American movie about a type of gangster this country will probably never see again. Or if we do they won't have the success that the Depression Era gangsters had. State, local and federal law enforcement agencies didn't have the resources or the inclination to work together. So you could really cut quite a swath if you had a fast car, plenty of firepower, and the don't give a damn attitude to go with it.

And even if you didn't know your history, you knew they were doomed. They didn't have the resources or the cunning to keep it up.

21. Actually....
the fact of those two actors presence is not why I love the film. The whole cast is good, and the movie is director Michael Mann at his best, IMO. I love the complexity of the story, and the way Mann under-introduces a lot of the character so you really have to pay attention to what's going on.

37. The Sopranos
I had to vote for "other" because we are currently watching all six seasons of "The Sopranos". I recommend it most highly. They pack a whole lot into each episode and each builds on the one before which has become something of an addicting. I will be sorry when we have watched them all and as all things, the story must end. Truly an American classic in the making.

46. White Heat (Cagney)
1949

"Top o' the world, ma!"

Even back then they were using such forensic devices as soil spectroscopy to identify the place of origin of a soil sample taken from clothing. They were also using RF vehicle bugging and triangulation (never mind that the transmitter used tube technology and was the size of a suitcase), and fed agents going undercover into prisons. There were a lot of things that we don't usually associate with those times. They did just fine without computers for a long, long time!

Besides, Cagney was the best gangster ever, even if he never said "You dirty rat!".

67. I voted for Grifters
Why? Because these are the people we run into every day...the ones getting by and getting over on other people. The mafia movies are well done and all but to me they kind of glamourize crime and the criminals involved and make them larger than life when in truth they aren't, they are smaller than life, and skeevy and skanky and sick. Grifters successfully got that across, just how twisted folks like this are and how if you are unfortunate enough to run across one in your day to day life it isn't going to make you fantasize about being them, it's gonna make you grateful to be you.
