The ony thing I liked about the awards .
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 04:53 PM by blues90
Was James Taylor singing Our Town by Randy Newman . Something about James voice that brings it all home . Perhaps it's because I'm a boomer . By the way , I did'nt watch them , my wife taped it so I could see James .

2. Why is everyone so negative about the awards...
I thought at least on DU I might be able to have a decent conversation about films and documentaries. Guess not! Last night was a great night for international cinema as well as the usual suspects. I found it more interesting than ever before because of that.

9. Not everyone likes bloated awards shows, but that doesn't mean...
you won't be able to "have a decent conversation about films and documentaries" at DU.

15. No, even before this I felt that way....
it seems no one appreciates the artistry. I hear a lot of complaining about the quality of movies, then when someone does something remotely artistic people call it artsy-fartsy and dismiss it. Whatever! Forest Whitaker is awesome and so was his acceptance speech.

3. Randy Looks So Old Now
JT looked great, sounded even better. There was a recent Kennedy Center awards show paying tribute to him that is excellent.

I've always loved Randy...going back to the "Rednecks" days of the 70's and saw him several times. He reminded me of someone's roommate who was always asked the play piano at a party...very laid back and fun. Last night, Randy really looked like he had aged in recent years. Yes, I know he's in his early 60's...but so is JT and many others.

Chalk this one up to this babyboomer getting older as well....

4. James sounds the same as he ever did .
His voice has not changed one bit , sad he lost all that hair but it does not seem to bother him . He must be 59 by now .

Oh well we all get old and loose something along the way , as long as it's not our heart and soul . Even this is something they are trying to take away from us .

I really miss the 60's and early 70's if not for anything else than the music .

John Lennon was an enormous loss for many , I can't imagine what he would think of this new world order we have now . Give peace a chance was certainly killed when bush jr came along .

Man , what a sad time we have reached .

8. I Hear John Lennon's Words Every Day
Gimme Some Truth is in constant rotation here...as is Watching The Wheel...words and emotions that I feel would very much reflect what Dr. Winston O'Boogie would be thinking today. In many ways, while he was a true role model for me as I was growing up and I miss him dearly, I'm glad he's not around to see what a bust out many of my generation have become. He remains timeless in my mind and his words still resonate sharply as ever...and inspire.

Close your eyes and JT sounds the same now as he did on Mud Slide Slim...that voice is still very unique and focused.

Thank goodness for Internet Radio (and a project I'm involved in)...I get to listen and live with a lot of that great music...bringing a lot of them to light to ears for the first time...or to old ones that haven't heard the vast quantity of great 60's and 70's tunes that corporate cookie-cutter Classic Rock stations never played.

Cheers...

11.  Lennon had many great songs that still hold today
Working class hero is one of my favorites as is Gimme some truth .

I saw CSN&Y live july 2006 at the hollywood bowl . Another great group who has songs that still apply today .

So many years have passed since the 60's I can hardly believe I am in the year 2007 in this horrid time . Things are so obviously wrong that this is what makes it so surreal . This is worse that the most expressive science fiction movie ever portrayed on screen .

12. It's A Gift I've Been Proud To Pass Along
While my parents and I had similar political perspectives (is being a Democrat genetic? LOL), culturally we had little in common. They hated Rock 'n Roll ("I can't understand the lyrics) and saw the social changes of the 60s as a repudiation of the "world order" they hoped to create.

One of the greatest joys I've had has been sharing my love of music with my children and they accepting it and sharing their music with me. The Beatles was the "gateway". They're still sacred here...and that opened their ears and minds to becoming critical listeners.

It bothers me to have the mindset of "the 60s and 70s" music is superior to what came out in the 80's, 90's or today...it's that in those days, Rock music, and especially FM Progressive Radio, was a haven of creative sounds...that's what I really miss these days.

17. I know exactly what you mean - I miss it too....
for me, the late 60's and 70's were a time of unparalleled creativity, at least in terms of music and film.

6. I thought the Will Ferrell bit with Jeff Black was very funny.
James is the best. Not the best song, but Newman is the greatest.

7. James Taylor
I agree 100 percent. When he started singing it brought it all back. He has one of those voices that make a song perfect. I had forgotten how good he is.
