Beat this "getting fired" Story.
I've been on VERY TEMPORARY disability since I badly broke my arm on 12/28/06. The cast just came off, and physical therapy started today.

They paid for January, and sent me a letter on the 24th of January asking for documentation to continue, which I supplied.

On the 12th of February, I got a certified letter, firing me retroactively to the first of February for not showing up on the first for work.

Top that one.

Needless to say, I've got Department of Labor investigating as to why they didn't simply continue on FMLA, which I applied for in January. I don't expect miracles, but I'd love to get the pay for the 3 weeks vacation they owe me.

2. When #2 son got fired
from his job, he went in to buy something -- I can't remember what -- and the girls at the counter told him to check his schedule.

The manager had written "Terminated" across his schedule. Never called, never wrote, never even spoke to him about it at all. And he was the last to find out, since it was pinned up on the bulletin board for everyone to see.

9. Sure did.
I even have an email telling me where to send a fax of it. the original is in my possession.

DOL says they screwed up by not putting me on it first or on Feb 1st, or not even offering it.

18. You're fine, then, as I'm sure you knew.
Just checking. :)

If you need any advice down the road, feel free to PM me. Against my will, I've learned all the intricacies of FMLA and disability (I'm a manager at a hospital).

6. I was once fired for doing too much work
The guy I was working for got hired by a new place - I was moving with him but we had to wait for his replacement so I went ahead and started at the new gig. By the time he got there, I had a routine going so he'd just show up occasionally and act like he was in charge.

Then the owner showed up one day, realized what was going on and gave him an ultimatum.

When I came in at 6 the next morning, my boss was actually there (I hadn't seen him that early in months) and informed me I was fired. Because I did too much. :eyes:

Ah, the good old days of non-union, under-the-table work!

10. I was for being a single mother.
They didn't actually say it but they said something about how I needed to spend more time w/ my newborn daughter and that they felt it best not to put me back on the schedule.

They also informed me that if the babysitting situation ever changed to let them know. What they really meant was if I decided to put my child up for adoption, gave her to my parents or if I ever married to let them know. They were big about morals.

21. I take it you're not surprised.
I had a few family members who were surprised and made the statement that there must be more to it.

Then again, none of them had ever worked for this family before. (Yep, nearly all the employees were family. Only reason I had a job was because they needed someone to keep the books and their own children were rather stupid. And it was one of the children who "let me go".)

8. I was hurt on the job and was told not to sign the FMLA.
My lawyer told me that they could use it to terminate my employment. It was something about being injured at work being covered far beyond the time limit for the FMLA. I don't remember exactly all of the reasons, but I ended up not signing it, and they couldn't fire me. They did end up firing me later for not checking in once a week.

11. Fired for doing my job
I was an IT contractor at the time and worked for two projects at different job sites. Like every other week or something for two days I was at the other site. Well one of the guys on my team at the place I spent most of my time at was made our team lead, thought nothing of it. Kept doing what I did and had been doing, next thing I know, I'm taken off the project for missing too many days without calling in.

16. I was fired while on vacation, but didn't find out until I got back.
When I got home after the two weeks off, I noticed a FedEx slip in my door -- inside was my last paycheck. My boss left a message on my answering machine, saying they had to let me go because we had just lost a major client, even though we knew it was coming for months.

His message droned on and on until the machine cut him off. He didn't bother to continue the message again.

Aside from the sheer idiocy and rudeness on his part, it didn't help that he didn't lay off another guy who ALWAYS fucked up and who we always had to cover for -- of course, another supervisor thought they should go easy on him because "he was getting married soon," like that had shit to do with anything.

I called my boss the next day, demanding an explanation -- one he couldn't really justify -- then found out that he didn't even know I was going to be on vacation at the time. Of course, showing up to work twice a week because he was busy with his mail-order Russian bride half his age (yes, all true), it'd be hard to keep track of details like when your employees are away.

I've moved far away since then, but if I ever see him again, I'm fucking him up on sight.

19. I was fired for being too honest and too competent
In three separate events!

1. Fired for marking used books as used in a university book store. If they had no marks in them, the owner wanted us to sell them as new.

2. Fired for speaking English to students in an English as a Second Language class.

3. Fired for telling Human Resources that my boss was making fun of employees behind their backs, giving some vacation and not allowing others to take it, etc. HR responded by firing me (they actually waited until after reviews so I could get an "unsatisfactory" review, after 11 consecutive "excellents"), then a month later found that in addition to what I had told them, he had been stealing from the company, so he got fired too, right after he bought a house. Sweet!

Believe me, there is ALWAYS something better on the way.

22. Dunno about getting fired, but I did get out of being drafted by showing up for the physical
in a wheelchair, with my right leg in a cast from hip to toes, and my left arm in a cast from shoulder to fingertips.

And they were real; it wasn't a stunt.
