Holy shit I may have just gotten a writing job on a magazine

Counting a couple chickens before they hatch here but there is going to be a magazine coming out in April called "Second Lifestyle" based on the virtual world Second Life and I was lucky enough to meet one of the editors in the game who was looking for people to sell subscriptions. I marched right up in my video avatar and told him. I'm not a salesman but I'm a writer, who do I give a resume to. Well I sent one off including several examples of the "Taxi reports" and some other things I've done and he contacted me today to ask what my salary requirements are. I'll probably start freelance but if this is a legit mag coming out it could lead to bigger things. Second Life is getting a lot of mainstream press lately and I think a mag on it is a viable idea. Wish me luck. More details when I get them. Can I interest anyone in a subscription? And does anyone know what magazine writers make? I have no clue what to ask for.

They might have salary information for magazine writers. I can't imagine that a startup would be able to pay very much. I doubt that you would be able to quit driving, but would you even want to right now? You're getting all your material for your book, after all. But a reduction in hours.... now that sounds tasty!

This sounds like a good opportunity, and I agree, this magazine could be a hit. More and more niche magazines are hitting their market (pets, business, food, travel... you name it), and the big "general interest" mags are tanking.

16. Magazine writers are paid usually by the word, and it isn't much.

Payment varies according to the circulation of the magazine. Generally they will set the payment scale, but it's good to know in advance what the general rates are in the writing community.

59. I write for magazines

In fact, I'm a contributing editor for a magazine and it does not pay my bills. Magazine writing is one of several things I do to make a living. The writing is mostly to get my name out there.

Unless you get into the high-circulation magazines (Vanity Fair, etc) it's usually not a very high paying job, but the perks can be very good. PR people can be quite generous, and you can get invited to a lot of events and parties and things like that.

It seems my flu shot was not strong enough to protect me from the strain of illness that my son brought home. Thankfully, so far I have a sore throat instead of the congestion he suffered from in his bronicals. Don't want that congestion, heart failure is too close a threat. So I will gladly suffer the swollen glands and the raspy throat and hope the congestion stays in my nasal cavities. We can always find something to be thankful for, I guess. :7

It sounds at best like a start-up out of someone's basement, to tell you the truth. It has potential, but don't think you're going to be given Newsweek money here.

And though I'm a cynic, to me it sounds like a scam. I wouldn't give them your bank account number, to say nothing of SSN or credit cards. And I certainly wouldn't send them the money for a subscription. The internet is full of people looking to take advantage of the creative. Do not submit a second article until you've been paid for the first, and insist on a check sent to your home address. Do not subscribe, or pay fees they may request up-front.
