Was Jimmy Page a better guitarist than Jeff Beck? Clapton?
As good technically that Beck was...and as emotive Clapton could be...

Led Zeppelin just speaks for itself

1. Esteban is the greatest guitarist alive.
Plus he wears a cool hat. Besides when was the last time you saw Clapton on QVC?

6. Beck is technically the best of the three.
Clapton comes in second. Page is good, but he sometimes has trouble playing cleanly.

7. No, and no.
Sloppy, in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong--I love Zeppelin. He wrote (or pilfered from the Blues) some great hooks and riffs, but his solos were often sloppy and disjointed.

Not as bad as Ritchie Blackmore, not even close.

But Clapton, of the three, would get my vote.

10. How can you trash Ritchie Blackmore?
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 07:10 AM by Alexander
The man had a huge bag of riffs and wasn't nearly as sloppy as Jimmy Pagerism.

26. I calls 'em as I hears 'em.
Blackmore's solos were waaaaay sloppy. They had nothing to do with the rest of the song.

I know that was his style. I know that's what he wanted. But it just grates.

when many Zep songs were just reworkings of old blues songs?

24. Well, many is not all.
True, Zeppelin has some pretty derivative material, but they had some amazing songs that had very little blues influence. Houses of the Holy is a classic album but I don't hear a lot of blues in it.

14. I don't think so, but I need to qualify this statement
Jimmy Page, while pretty good at *playing* the guitar, was much better at what *effects* he could produce from a guitar--much like Hendrix.

That's an entirely different animal than Beck, or Clapton, or my hero, Steve Howe.

It's almost like asking "who's the better skater: Bonnie Blair or Nancy Kerrigan?"

25. Page is an excellent producer and had a great ear for layering
and textures. Effects like Hendrix though? I guess, but I think a lot of what Page could do what a result of extensive studio work and less a product of a rack of pedals (or whatever they used back in the day).

16. I've listened to Beck and I've listened to Page
and I've come to conclusion that it's very difficult to compare these two guitarists to each other. Both had very unique sounds that made them memorable throughout history.

27. It's inevitable that the two (and Clapton too)
will be compared: Brit blues/rock guys of the late sixties. I think Clapton is the truest to the blues roots, and Page/Zep were a creative force; one of the best rock bands of all time. But JBs guitar vocabulary is just so much wider and more interesting than the other two that it puts him for me in another league. And on top of that the way the dude can bend a note just brings a fuckin tear to my eye! I'm not sure I can say that about *any* other player.

17. Yes, absolutely. Sorry I can't help factoring in the songs they write into ability
nobody holds a candle to Zeppelin in general and Page in particular.

They put out 8 albums of pure timelessness in 12 or so years. Best band ever, and Page was the most crucial part of that.

19. Better? Dunno. I like Page better than Beck, and Clapton better than both
But I'm more into emotive than technical. To me, technical is only worth anything if it enhances the passion behind the playing, which is why people like Kenny Wayne Shepard don't excite me.

29. Why does one have to be best?
Good artists are also unique. I think that all three are good, and so are many other guitarists. Each has their own voice, their own style.

These three each passed through the Yardbirds, but that is really the only connection.

I think Hendrix is more important than any of them, and probably the best musician, as well as being a good songwriter, for players from that era.
