8. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
I grew up on Bradbury. Also Heinlein, Asimov, and all the others. But Bradbury has always been my favorite.

The new stuff kinda pisses me off, but "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" is all right. (Oh, that reminds me--"Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." :P)

7. "Bennie and the Jets"
for that major 7th on the opening G major (do I remember that right?) and for the line "when we fight our parents out in the streets to find who's right and who's wrong." Plus lyrically it was quite a clever Bowie rip or parody.

I saw him do it on "Soul Train." It was so fucking cool.

of tunes if you throw in the PIPPIN number.

And you've chosen very well there also.

42. I don't think you can go wrong with PIPPIN. A bit naughty for most
high school performances, but some terrific compositions. Not easy to sing, either. I respect anybody who can stay on pitch through even half of that line-up.

On Elton John and Bernie Taupin, I think your three choices there are strong, and wish we'd hear more of that sound. I realize it's been a long time ago since the ink dried on those compositions, but when i hear them today, they sound as if they were written this morning. So fresh, and so confessional. Just the right blend of velvet and gravel.

45. Pippin's my favorite musical
I never had a chance to be in it, though. Came close once--auditioned for a community theater production. BEGGED for the narrator role, but the director really wanted me to be Katherine. But I can't hit some of her notes--I'm a solid second alto/tenor. So I ended up in the chorus. Then the whole thing folded for some reason--we never even had one rehearsal.

I did do two numbers in a musical showcase in college--"Magic to Do" to open the show, then "I Guess I'll Miss the Man" (unplugged! LOL! with my guitar). I know what you mean about tough to sing, though--on the first night, I went FLAT on my last couple of notes for "I Guess"! AUUUUGHHHHH the horror! I nailed it the second night though. Phew! (And luckily the audience was much smaller the first night--not too many people witnessed my flub.)

And may I also say that you have quite the turn of phrase--"velvet and gravel"--nice! Are you a writer?

I've never been good enough for the stage but spent countless happy
hours in the orchestra pit.

French horn.

A lot of my respect for singers of all kinds comes from the honest realization that I can't do what they can do, and won't ever, so it's my role to absorb the experience as a listener and appreciator.

A friend of mine in Philadelphia hates musicals no matter what they are or who wrote them. I tried to defend Julie Andrews' voice. "She had a nearly unprecedented octave range at the peak of her career," I insisted. He said, "If she's that good, why do they have her singing "Do Re Me?"

I'll add a thanks for typing 'Magic to Do' in your post -- it's already wormed its way into my head and will hopefully remain there for several hours to come. "Kings and things to take by storm..."

"So where to now, St. Peter, if it's true I'm in your hands
I may not be a Christian, but I've done all one man can
I understand I'm on the road where all that was is gone
So where to now, St. Peter; show me which road I'm on
Which road I'm on..."

-- no odd glasses -- with that original band.

They played Bernie Taupin/Elton John compositions up through and including MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER and some newer tunes that appeared later on HONKEY CHATEAU and TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION.

The audience was newly attentive to this piano rocker at the time. Strong applause, very appreciative crowd. Many of us had one or both those early LPs. (Yes, LPs!)

By the end of the concert people's hands were raw from clapping and the place was very satisfied that it had gotten much more than its money's worth. The band came back out for an encore: "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by the Stones.

The Stones' version is the A+ version. But this version was an A.

No frills, straight-ahead blues rock and those lyrical melodies from those early albums. A terrific performance.

Blue eyes
Baby's got blue eyes
Like a deep blue sea
On a blue blue day
Blue eyes
Baby's got blue eyes
When the morning comes
I'll be far away
And I say

Blue eyes
Holding back the tears
Holding back the pain
Baby's got blue eyes
And she's alone again

Blue eyes
Baby's got blue eyes
Like a clear blue sky
Watching over me
Blue eyes
I love blue eyes
When I'm by her side
Where I long to be
I will see

Blue eyes laughing in the sun
Laughing in the rain
Baby's got blue eyes
And I am home, and I am home again

In the quiet silent seconds
I turned off the light switch
and I came down to meet you
In the half light the moon left
while a couple of night jars sang
some songs out of tune
A mantle of bright light shone
Down from the moon

Come down in time
I still hear her say
so clear in my ear
like it was today...

81. "Friends"
Edited on Mon Mar-12-07 09:50 PM by MassLiberal
Also "Your Song," "Daniel," "Rocket Man," "Levon," "Tiny Dancer".....

I hope the day will be a lighter highway
For friends are found on every road
Can you ever think of any better way
For the lost and weary travellers to go

Making friends for the world to see
Let the people know you got what you need
With a friend at hand you will see the light
If your friends are there then everything's all right

It seems to me a crime that we should age
These fragile times should never slip us by
A time you never can or shall erase
As friends together watch their childhood fly

84. "Love Song", from Tumbleweed Connection
The words I have to say
May well be simple but they're true
Until you give your love
There's nothing more that we can do

Love is the opening door
Love is what we came here for
No one could offer you more
Do you know what I mean
Have your eyes really seen

You say it's very hard
To leave behind the life we knew
But there's no other way
And now it's really up to you

Love is the key we must turn
Truth is the flame we must burn
Freedom the lesson we must learn
Do you know what I mean
Have your eyes really seen

Elton and I have the same bd! March 25th. :D

88. I've Seen that Movie Too
For those of us who've encountered members of the opposite sex who act as if they're the star of their own private movie, this song nails it.

90. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and "Tiny Dancer"....Saw
Elton John at Dodger Stadium back in 1975. I was all of 21 and was student teaching at the time. I remember telling my student teaching advisor, an older lady, that I was going to the Elton John concert and she looked at me aghast and said, "Aren't you a little old for that sort of thing?"
LOL
