What was the last film you saw?
Last night, I watched "Love is the Devil", a film about British artist Frances Bacon, with Derek Jacobi as Bacon and Daniel Craig as George, Bacon's lover. I'm not sure I liked it...Bacon, as wonderfully played by Jacobi, wasn't a likable person. But imaginatively made and interesting.

85. It was cool too.
Varying sexualities and experiences as just a part of life. Not about titilation so much as just "life" (but some parts were titilating still). Kind of refreshing in a film.

6. The Lives of Others, a german movie that won the best foreign
Edited on Sat Apr-14-07 02:04 PM by jonnyblitz
film academy award this year was the last movie I went to the theater to see. it was very bleak but good. the last movie I watched at home was either "the Queen" or the 1931 "M" by Fritz Lang. I have roman polanski's "repulsion" from the 60's, with Catherine Denueve to watch PLUS "All the Kings Men" with Sean Penn.

I am going to see "The Namesake" tonight.

61. Meh... I was entertained.
Sure, the plot completely falls apart if you poke a sharp stick at it, and Scarlett Johansson disappears halfway through the movie with no explanation, but I had fun.

My advice for those who want to see it: Enjoy it for what it is, and don't think about it for one second after it's over.

Predictable, yes, but a little more entertaining. I'm just glad I saw it on Netflix rather than paying $9.

I found The Prestige's ending just silly beyond belief because the ending was really, really unrealistic (really, it was bad) and I fell asleep for a bit myself during the film.

Will Ferrell has a sort of schizophrenic film career...he can do stuff like "Talladega Nights" and his current movie...and yet also do Woody Allen films and "Stranger Than Fiction". I thought "Stranger than Fiction" was a nice movie...smart, funny and had heart.

Another great movie about Vietnam is "The Deer Hunter".

I wasn't wild about "Eyes Wide Shut" or "The Shining". It would have been interesting to see what Kubrick would have done had he completed "AI", instead of Spielberg.

I've never seen "Eyes Wide Shut" yet because of the cast. If I ever buy the Kubrick Collection, I might give it a try.

"AI" would have been interesting if Kubrick made it, I'm sure. Spielberg just delivered another "ET" with a mushy end. None of the characters have 'character' in it.

You couldn't get too more different directors than Kubrick and Spielberg. The ending to "AI" was, like you said, an "ET" ending. I'm sure there were people who got weepy at the end.

"Eyes Wide Shut" - I'll leave it for you to decide. I didn't care for it one bit.

stood about wondering what she was doing (cultural disconnect) while/though she was praying to her God with the final moment a true suspension of film-time, then the march off to the Perfume River through the fog of war singing Mickey Mouse Club Theme Song, a film perfectly paced at a time when films were seen without so much CGI

83. I like to picture Jesus wearing a tuxedo t-shirt!
It says "I wanna be formal, but I'm here to party!"

60. Disturbia
I saw this horror/suspense (but more suspense than horror) film at the theater last night, and thought it was a well done and surprisingly intense "scary" movie. It's PG-13 so it's obviously targeted, to a degree, with teenagers in mind, but I think it's actually quite a bit better than the typical teen-targeted horror flick. It had me more on the edge than a movie has made me in a long time.

63. Casino Royal and La Mome and Héros de la famille
Daniel Craig is the BEST James Bond EVER! - He totally gets the entire characterization. Plus Eva Green is completely hot. Unbelieveably good film.

La Mome - French bio pic about Edith Piaf - Marion Cotillard should get an Oscar, a BAFTA award and the Cannes Palm d'Or for her stunning portrayal.

Héros de la famille - DeNeuve wonderful as ever, Emmanuel Beart just delicious, and the rest of the cast is excellent.

73. The Battle of Algiers
I'd seen it in pieces on TV so I finally got it on Netflix and watched it straight through.
The day I watched it was the day Algiers was getting bombed

77. Marebito. Underrated Japanese horror film by the dude who made Ju-On/The Grudge.
Owns the shit out of The Grudge. Very original take on the vampire. A touch of expressionist filmmaking reminiscent of Japanese classic Kwaidan at one point. Shot on digital video, an aesthetic of which I am becoming a big fan.

82. Grindhouse
A hell of a lot of fun and a great theater experience! Planet Terror was quite ridiculous, but entertaining. Death Proof was pretty boring in the beginning but it's interesting to see where Tarantino goes with it.

Oh and the trailers that run during it are funny as hell!

I don't know if I can do the 'plot' justice, so I'm going to nick somebody else's summary:

Using the original persons involved as actors, Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami blends drama with documentary in what must not be called a 'docudrama.' Instead, Kiarostami takes on the journey of a poor many for whom cinema is a most important spiritual institution. Caught off-guard with a script, he fibs, and impersonates a famous director. One thing leads to another, and he ends up in the home of a family, convincing them, and perhaps himself, that he's about to make a great film, using their house and family.

A journalist gets wind of the story and brings the police to the house to arrest what may be a dangerous con man. The story is told in the courthouse, in re-enacted flashbacks (using the real persons involved), with Kiarostami directly involved, on-screen in the filming. A truly innovative and wonderful film about the power of movies, forgiveness, and the spiritual depth of one lonely soul.

Very good film & very recommended. It is out on DVD, but you can also find it alongside many other Iranian films here:

87. Stranger than Fiction
Being a writer who isn't writing right now, I thought that I'd like it and did. My husband, who didn't think that he'd like it from the previews, actually did. It was different from the other movies that I've seen.

90. Last night I finally watched "The Godfather" from start to finish.
I'd seen it on TV over the years in bits and pieces -- I'd come upon it half way through, for example, and it was broken up by commercials, etc. It was a pleasure to watch it uninterrupted.

91. Premonition with Sandra Bullock
It was pretty strange. The only reason I spent my time and money on it was that it was hyped somewhere as another "Sixth Sense" which I loved. Premonition was no sixth sense, I can tell you. The wholeplot just fell apart at the end.

What I want to know is why do they invest all this money, time and talent in a movie that simply doesn't have a coherent end to it? Your left with trying to figure out what really happened and what didn't and why.

But the last movie I saw before that was Devil Loves Prada. Man, that was a terrific movie. Good acting, great script, terrific directing, just a boffo job all around. Meryl Streep is my number one goddess.

Neat film. The critics were right about the cinematography. A bit plodding at times, but it grew more engaging as it went along, I thought.
