One hell of a winter storm coming!
First I got the Winter Storm Watch notice saying that we might expect a foot of snow or more here in southwestern NH. Then I got another alert but the first one has not been cancelled. The second alert is for heavy rains and heavy flooding. All of this is supposed to happen in the space of about 12-18 hours on Sunday. I don't know whether to dust off my snowshoes or get the boat ready.

1. I moved back to San Francisco four years ago this month.
We moved out by the beach and I was astonished at how mild the weather was, at seeing surfers out most everyday when I remember that my family NEVER went to the beach when I was growing up because it was always overcast and shrouded in fog.

This week, though, the wind has been bitterly cold. I just never know what to expect any more.

Isn't it late for snow where you live, Raven?

2. A week ago, I awoke to snow in the good old Old Dominion.
We were heading to Myrtle Beach for a bit, it was a balmy 40 degrees. :eyes:

We're supposed to get a killer rain storm tonight.

3. Last summer, my roses were actually SCORCHED by the sun.
That didn't happen when we were growing up here in the 60s & 70s. You couldn't GROW a rose out here then. It was too wet and not warm or cold enough. I have five now, growing in about a foot of soil. That's got to be a sign of the Apocalypse.

4. It is late for this kind of snow.
We've been known to get snow as late as May but usually an inch or so...up here that is called "the poor man's fertilizer". But this winter has been very strange.

9. Snow in New England in April is common!
New England is notorious for late winter/early spring snowstorms! ;)

A spring storm brings back winter

Fri, Apr. 04, 2003 9:38 AM ET

By the Associated Press

http://www.weather.com/newscenter/topstories/030404northeastwinter.html

ALBANY, N.Y. and CONCORD, N.H. (AP)

Two weeks into spring, a wintry mix closed schools from Niagara Falls to Albany Friday, with freezing rain causing power outages along Lake Ontario while parts of the Adirondacks received nearly a foot of snow. Winter also returned to New Hampshire on Friday, closing schools, fouling the morning commute and postponing any plans to get a head start on weekend gardening.

At the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, meteorologist John Cannon said it's another
sign the calendar doesn't tell the whole story in New England.

"It is late in the year," he said, "but we have a very unusually cold Arctic high pressure system feeding down cold air from Canada, going with a storm over the Ohio Valley that's slowly moving northeast."

Simply put: "That means snow for southern New Hampshire, then mixed precipitation by late tonight,"
Cannon said.

snip-->

Snow in April is common.
In 1982, the state got 13.3 inches on one day in April, the Weather Service said. April snowstorms
brought 8.6 inches in a single day in 1918 and 1996, 8.3 in 1996 and 6.8 inches on a single day in 1925.

6. Weirdness in Ohio, too.
In January my stinging nettles were coming out. Now they're frozen. (They'll come back, of course. Can't kill a stinging nettle!) February we got snow (much to the delight of the puppies), in March the temperature edged into the 80's, and there was a bit of snow in the air when I got back from the post office earlier.

We played tennis that day, and the next day there was rain, snow, and wind. Blech.

Hurry up, Spring!!

7. there's a chance of snow here in SW PA, just wet snow Sunday night
it seems kind of late to me, but the weather folks were saying there were actually 14 inches of snow here in April of 1901. :wow:

Usually there is some danger of frost here til mid of late May.

I just expected it to be warmer this time of year.

15. Because this storm is HUGE and building!!!
There is very cold arctic air pouring down from Canada and very warm, humid, air coming up
from the south and a lot of wind. When the two meet, it'll cause snow, if it's cold enough.
The storm will gather more moisture as it moves over the Atlantic ocean.

13. We're getting a 14 foot tide. I fully expect my road to be underwater sunday night.
The spring tide+heavy rain+big winds blowing in more tide=Portland under water.

Not quite sure where I'm going to put my car.

17. This looks like one of those storms where you check in on a
neighbor and/or an elderly person just to make sure they are ok. It may be the high winds and water that are the biggest threat...power outages and all. We still haven't recovered from the floods a year ago that took some lives. Be safe everybody!

22. Yeah, we're all in bloom here in Portland, Oregon. It's Portland, Maine that's possibly targeted.
Wishing you all the best of luck. I read about this on Friday's weekend U.S. forecast at the radio station.

It's Sunday at 6 PM Pacific Time. Anyone from the East Coast reporting in now?
