Crocodile bites off veterinarian's arm. (Warning: MILDLY GRAPHIC)
Don't worry, he got it reattached. See?

Surgeons in Taiwan have reattached a vet's arm, after it was bitten off by a crocodile as he tried to give it an anaesthetic injection.
After six hours of surgery, Chang Po-yu is said to be doing well and in a stable condition in hospital.

His attacker is one of a pair of Nile crocodiles kept at Shoushan zoo, in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung.

Nile crocodiles are known to be man-eaters, but are also listed as an endangered species.

And nicely enough, they just hit the croc with tranquilizers to get it to let the arm go (why the article says "bullets," I have no idea.) Didn't kill it.

This is my new desktop wallpaper. :)

1. holy shit
you know, msnbc.com had in their animal pics this week the video of the vet's arm being wrenched off -- I couldn't watch it. Maybe I'll go back and check it out, now that I know the vet got his arm back and the croc wasn't killed.

I think I'd immediately wet myself, perhaps vacate the bowels, too, if I saw one of those coming after me. I bear no creature any ill will, and want them all to live happily ever after, but am terrified of large sharks, crocs and alligators.

4. In Louisiana, south of Lake Charles, there used to be a nature reserve
where you could walk among the beasts. Apparently, they were kept well fed by the nutra rats out there and didn't bother the human beings. I have been a few times, and have been just yards away from 12-15 foot gators, even some with their young, and never had a problem. Mind you, I was very prepared to run like hell, but they just sorta sat there. I have been in the spring when all they want to do is lay in the sun. Very educational to say the least. Don't know if it's still there after Rita though.

2. You know, I'm still mildly freaked out about the idea of reattaching a body part
I konw they've been doing it for years now. But still, when you think about all the tearing muscle damage, all the bone smashing & splintering damage, and all the tiny blood vessels & nerve connections that got ruptured in an injury like this--and then the idea that they can reattach all of it quick enough before the flesh goes bad...

It's really quite mind boggling the complexity of a repair job like this.

By the way, the croc's name is Lorena Bobbit.

I do not like crocodiles. I really do not like them. I mean, they are very interesting, but I would NEVER go near one and the idea just gives me the willies. That poor guy.
