I feel like a bum
I'm 34 years old and I'm living with my parents. They say they don't mind and I can stay here as long as I want, but I still feel like a bum. They won't let me give them any money, but I help keep the place up and I buy my own groceries. But I still feel like a bum.

This all came about because I ran into some financial trouble last year and had to sell my house. Things are looking better now. My debt is now manageable and I'm paying it off. I have enough money to get into a cheap house now or maybe an apartment, but it will take much longer to pay off my remaining debt way. I'd much rather have a nice house, though. What would you do? Keep in mind that you feel like a bum.

1. You're not a bum...you ran into some hard times. Let your parents
help you if they want. You'll be on your own again before you know it.

2. My dear Droopy!
Now you know what I would do!

We just had that conversation....

Stay put, save your money, pay down your debt till it's gone...

And keep your eyes open for a good, reasonably priced property!

You are no more a bum than I am...

5. Yeah, but we didn't discuss my feeling-like-a-bumminess
It's probably the wise thing to pay of the debt first and I do like living here, but I'd much rather be able to say that I'm self sufficient.

3. I would stay put
until I was out of debt.

If they wouldn't take money from me, I would at least buy them gifts now & then. By gifts I don't mean a bottle of perfume or a shirt but things for the house. If something is broke or worn out, replace it.

Good luck getting out of debt & into your own place.

4. You're not a bum, Droopy.
You ran into hard times, like lots of folks, including me. I think it's nice that you can live with your parents while you take care of your debt. Get things straightened out, do some stuff for your parents to thank them, and soon you'll be back out on your own.

6. Just keep the house clean for them
Dishes, dust, sweep, mop... that sort of thing.

7. Families are for something.
My family has been supporting me for six months while I sort myself out and that's been really hard for me because I've worked since I was 12 years old.

You're in a family that can back you up and that is a an amazing thing. We need more families like that.

It's all right to accept help when you need it, Droopy. And sometime, you will pay it back or forward. That's sort of part of the joy of being human and being in a family. lol
