Update on my kitten's illness
Last night I posted a thread asking for advice about my kitten, the newest addition to our family of two dogs, five cats and a fish, who had become very ill over the weekend and who was having seizures, among other problems.

We had found him at six weeks old in the old nursery behind our house, he's now four months old. We don't know where he came from, if someone had dumped him or if he was the offspring of one of the feral cats in the nursery.

Anyway, I managed to get him into the vet this morning. He was so ill, the vet kept him there and is running a whole workup of blood and other tests. His kidneys felt enlarged to her and looked too big on the x-ray. She said if it turns out to be kidney or liver disease that it's probably congenital and there isn't much that can be done. He was very dehydrated because, while I could get him to eat, I couldn't get him to take any water, so they're giving him IVs with water and food. He was so sick, and his seizures are getting so bad, that it was really painful to watch.

I'm supposed to call the vet back around 3:00 this afternoon, she'll know more then about his blood and other test results and will have a better idea of what it is and what, if anything, should be done. I'm just heartsick about it, because he's such a sweetheart and he'd gotten very attached to me. But if I have to put him down, I know that that will be the humane thing to do.

Keep good thoughts coming our way, please, and maybe I'll have some better news in a few hours! And thanks to everyone who responded to the thread, I appreciate it.

2. We Are Praying For You & Kitty
Thank You for taking him in and caring for him.

If he has to go and find a new body, remember that your kindness on his present journey will have helped him along the way.

10. I know, and as heartsick
as it will make me if I have to put him to sleep, I do feel better knowing that he had at least a couple of months of love and care instead of freezing to death alone at only six weeks old.

5. Sad
I hope the little precious hangs in there.
My cat fricka lived for 14 years with bad kidneys. It was genetic for her so we fed her a special kind of food,we'd get from the vet,and severly limited any"snacks" to a few licks or bits..other than that her life was good and long. She only had a few incidents with her kidneys screwing upBecause we knew about it we were on it and got her to the vet lickety-split..Her kidneys lasted her 14 years before they failed for the last time. So don't lose hope for the fuzzball yet.

If it wasen't for your kind choice to help who could this kitten turn to?
It's hearing about people like you who give me hope that humanity isn't all a bunch of self absorbed, greedy oblivious crapheads. Sometimes I get so disgusted with my species I think we'd be better off dead, than I heare a story like this.
Take care, and my heart and magick is with you and this kitten.
When he recovers and he still might, you never know, please post a picture of him if you can.

11. I don't know yet if it's kidney
disease, although it looks like that's what it could be. We've had cats with bad kidneys before, and you're right, they can live with special diets and if you make sure they don't get into something they're not supposed to have. With four other cats in the house, that'll be a little hard, but it can be done.

6. I Nursed Our Cat Back From Dehydration After An Attack...
It was very difficult but the vet gave us an IV and needles and we injected it twice daily between her skin and her body, in the neck area. We couldn't have afforded it if we had to leave her at the emergency vets and let them do it.

I hope there is no kidney disease, but the dehydration is very serious and this is one solution that will work, but it's tough to do.

You have to get the fluid just the right temperature. I used a microwave, and then test it like you test a baby's bottle before you inject.

If it's just dehydration, that is one solution.

19. SORRY I DIDNT SEE THAT YESTERDAY
My wife is a Vet she probably could have helped a little. Well next time send a message. I know the freepers would get all perplexed about us getting weepy and "caring" about what happens to a kitten. But then again we do have dominian over the Beasts of the Earth so its the least we can do.

21. freepers would be "perplexed"
because it involves cats - animals which refuse to serve man. Freeepers cannot see the usefulness of anything that doesn't serve them.

22. There is a kitty dialysis procedure called hydroush
where they insert a solution under the skin and it cleanses the kidneys. Sometimes, it takes several sessions to bring back the kidneys. However, if it's congenital maybe it's only prolonging the inevitable.

I'm sorry to read this LH and hope things come out good for you.
