Poll question: Favorite Cheese?

I have always been a fan of aged swiss and extremely sharp white cheddar...

21. Outstanding.
In Ann Arbor, Michigan, there used to be a restaurant called "The Garbage Pit." They made a "Garbage Burger," 1/2 pound, with mushrooms and onions (grilled together) topped with Bleu and then stuck under the broiler to melt the cheese, then put on an onion kaiser.

Funny how something that smelled like garbage could taste like ambrosia?

8. LOL, did you ever live in Chico, California, Velveeta capital of the world?
Someone once told legendary San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen about finding a box of Velveeta cheese in the "gourmet foods" section of a local supermarket, and ever after Caen would tack on "Velveeta capital of the world" to any mention of Chico in his column. It became his most famous running joke that people still chuckle about, and he's been dead for years.

9. Oh, wow. I'd forgotten that.
I started reading Herb Caen when I was a kid. I remember being a young 20-something, out and about in some hip spot in San Fran, and there Herb would be, hanging with the young folks at the bar. What a great guy.

He also had a running joke about Rossmore (the Walnut Creek retirement community for the 55+ set). A waterbed there would be known as "the dead sea."

Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 11:31 PM by BrotherBuzz
and was tickled to find I married one of Herb Caen's sources. My wife has a stash of handwritten postcards thanking her for the nuggets she sent him over the years. Damn, she even got credit for one of my lines published in his column! He was a great guy; the Sackoftomato boy did good.

65. I'll be in Oregon in a couple of weeks
I'll have to look for some. I love a good blue, especially with Triscuits (flame away). set me down with a hunk of Roquefort and a box of them crackers, and I'm a pig. Danish blue need not apply, it's waaay too damn salty.

Any maker/brand you recommend? I'll be passing through Tillamook.

68. I don't remember any specific brand label or maker
Our local cheese and butcher shops in California simply call it Oregon Blue. It appears to be a ten inch wheel of commercial blue cheese of consistent quality that I have grown to like. I'm a trusting soul at times, I assume it comes from Oregon. ;)

Triscuits are great! Have you tried the new black pepper flavor?

I haven't seen them here. I'll watch for them in your fair land. And Corn Chex. I love Corn Chex.

Where the cheese is concerned, I guess I'll just have to try them all. That wheel sounds pretty big, but I guess it's already moldy, so maybe it won't go bad.

edit edit edit: I looked at the Googles, found this: http://www.roguecreamery.com/ Is that your stuff? Man, it looks good. Now I'm even more excited about the trip: wine, beer, and now blue cheese! W00t!
