I sprained my ankle REALLY badly.
I was walking up a set of stairs, and I lost my balance, and my foot landed twisted on the stair below. The pain was intense. I got inside, elevated it and my gf iced it. It looked swollen, but not TOO bad. Then I decided I needed to go the bathroom. By the time I got back to the couch, the ankle was about 5 times it size (literally...and maybe even more than 5!!).

Man this sucks. I was supposed to go to the in-laws farm this weekend, and they have a really sweet trampoline.

1. wow, that's too bad.

I haven't sprained my ankle in a long time but whenever I get bitten by fire ants on my foot mine swells up like an elephant foot, it's really weird; and my skin stays really hot and feels all leathery for days.

Too bad you are gonna miss out on the trampoline. :(

2. Several years ago
I was going up to see my wife who worked on capitol hill...I was unemployed at the time and had been making the rounds up there...
anyway, I was walking out of the metro station and I realized that I needed to get something ... I had just stepped on the up escalator but I absentmindedly stepped back and turned around ... tore all 3 ligaments in my ankle.

Hurts just remembering.

3. Ouch.
I suspect that I may have torn something (or realllllly stretched it). It was too late to go to the doc. I may go tommorow.

11. and DON'T take aspirin or advil
they can actually make the swelling worse since they are blood thinners. Take tylenol for the pain, keep it elevated and iced and if you have any kind of compression wrap (ace bandage) put that on too. If it doesn't get better or you can't put any weight on it this morning, you should see the doctor.

10. Keep us posted. My husband slipped and fell

while cutting the lawn years ago. His foot swelled up hugely and he was in terrible pain. But we had tickets to attend a Christmas dinner dance that night, and he was determined to go at all costs. He couldn't get his foot into his dress shoes, so he stuck on a pair of tennis shoes and hobbled in. It was a sad, sorry sight. Needless to say we didn't dance. When I told the other people at our table that he had injured his ankle that day and was in pain, they all asked what the hell we were doing there. The next day, a Sunday, I finally convinced him to go to the emergency room. He had a slight crack in his ankle bone. The er doctor wrapped it, issued him a set of crutches, and told him to go see an orthopedic specialist the next day. He called his old family boyhood trusted doctor who referred him to an orthopedic guy who put a cast on his foot apparently too tight. The foot swelled into the cast and he was in worse pain. After a couple of weeks, he finally hacked the cast off himself in the garage and just stayed off the foot until it was better.

I don't know why I'm relaying this whole saga. Maybe just for comic relief. Anyhow, I'm sure by now you've been to the doctor and know what the problem is. I hope your foot heals quickly and that your story has a much more favorable outcome.

8. Do you have any aleve?
Naproxen? Best thing for swelling.

I really hope you didn't tear anything. Visit your doctor tomorrow.

G'night. :hi:

12. no, not for the first 24-48 hours
aleve also thins the blood and can increase the swelling because of that. The only pain reliever you should take for the first 24-48 hours is tylenol. It won't reduce the swelling, but it won't increase it either the way aspirin, advil or aleve will.

9. I broke my leg on Christmas morning
I called the ambulance and everything. The idiots looked at it and said that I probably just twisted my ankle. Gave me some ice and wrapped me up. I'm very old school, so I basically spent the whole night "walking it off." I was standing on one foot putting pressure on it, just willing myself to loosen it up and tough it out. I walked around on it for almost two days before my aunt and uncle made me go to the hospital. Sure enough, it was broken. Effing EMTs, pissed me off.

I would get a bucket or a large pot or something, fill it with ice cold water, put your foot in it, and then pour some ice in their along with it. You will barely be able to stand it for several minutes but then you get used to it. Do that for about 15-20 minutes. No longer, because you don't want to freeze your foot too much. That's a safe time. Take some aspirin here and there too. The swelling will go down quickly.

14. Do make sure it's not broken
if it hurts, really, really, bad. I see up thread you have some advice about nixing the ibuprofen. I was taught that an extra large dose helps prevent maximum swelling. Don't quote me, and I'm not exactly advising, but 1200mg of ibuprofen is what I was told, just for the first time. Your local hospital may have the ask-a-nurse feature. You could call them. An acquaintance of mine recently fell and broke both ankles and his wrist. Look for bruising and abnormal shape. That could signal a break. Sympathy vibes sent your way.
