...Gatorade for them to drink over ice cubes. Any flavor. My two older dogs were not getting enough liquids for the extreme heat here and the vet charged me a hundred bucks on a Sunday for that piece of advice. They were both lethargic and not eating well. Throwing up. A real mess.

Worked like a charm too. They love the stuff. They will actually fight over it. It seems to be just about their most favorite thing they have ever tasted.

And man are they doing good. They act like there is no heat.

They do pee like thoroughbred racehorses now though so you will need to give your pup plenty of walks.

1. That's an excellent suggestion!
:hi: My dogs stay indoors most of the time in the summer, but they drink a LOT more water than they do in other seasons. Of course, that stands to reason, but when they're particularly hot, I'll try the Gatorade suggestion. :D

One other good suggestion---if your dog is very, very hot, pour cool water over his or her head. We do this for our dogs if they are outside and getting very hot. :) Works like a charm.

2. Good idea
Pedialyte might is another option. I believe it has less sugar than Gatorade

My dogs love the hot weather and we have to be careful they don't get sunburned. By the number of times I have to let the little one out at night she is drinking plenty.

3. I did not know that dogs could get sunburn
But I did know they can get skin cancer, since a vet once told me two of mine had lesions that could be cancer if they did not clear up within a couple weeks. (Thankfully they did, but imagine those two weeks of thinking I could lose both dogs at once!)

I also did not know dogs could drink Gatorade, and usually dogs don't want to drink anything fruity. Maybe I'll try it. It could be fun ;-)

5. Depends on the breed
We have white Italian greyhoungs. Their coat is so thin you can see their pink skin and will burn if they lie in the sun too long. Fall and spring are more dangerous because they love to soak up the rays when the air is cool.

4. My dog has been drinking so much water this summer
I was starting to worry that he was diabetic. He will stand at the bowl and drink over a quart. Then he has to pee a quart. Then he comes in and drinks a quart. I have to come home and let him out to pee a quart at lunch or he may not make it till I get home from work. At first I thought he was sick. But he's just doing what he needs to do. He doesn't do it on the cooler days. Wakes me up at night to pee a quart. Drinks a quart and I know he is going to wake me up again... but I love him so its ok.
