1. Fluff and feel-goodism. And he gets far too much airtime on PBS
His bland pronouncements are the kind of "you can do it" pep talk that's so beloved of the self-help crowd and lacking in any real insight or advice not immediately apparent to anyone prone to a little introspection.

You can always tell that it's pledge week, because they trot out his piffle and put it into ultra-heavy rotation whenever they need to persuade people to crank open their wallets.

Ditto for Suze Ormand. At least she offers some sound financial advice, but she likewise gets too much PBS airtime.

27. The piffle you dismiss... gets good ratings, at least at KOPB-TV in Portland, where I volunteer.
However, I do agree with you about the repeats and repeats.

(How long HAS Lawrence Welk been gone????)

Sincerely,

Radio Lady (volunteer affiliation with Oregon Public Broadcasting's Accessible Information Network)

2. He's done us the favor of popularizing japam.
Check out his book "Getting into the Gap". Even if you don't like any of his other stuff, there is great merit in japa.

6. Great motivational speaker
His first book was huge. I think people like him are worth listening to because sometimes we lose sight of certain things and he is one of those people that when you listen you say to yourself "Oh yeah, forgot about that".

I like his outlook and he is a pretty funny guy. I've read a few of his books because they looked interesting, and I enjoyed them.

10. It sure is... The first time I saw Dyer on late-night cable
I thought it was Bradshaw for at least 5 minutes. I was extremely confused, to say the least!

9. He's just a great big douchebag jackoff who preys on people
"For a mere 50 grand, I'll come speak about the simple good life of optimistic fluffery, just like the prosperity Gospel assholes except without the ignorant theology!"

If he gets killed by a falling grand piano tomorrow, it will be thirty years too late.

16. I made my comment in a lighthearted way, to juxtapose your obvious disgust of the man
It was not certainly not my intention to hurt your feelings or "shame" you in public.
I'm frankly somewhat surprised you would take such umbrage at such a silly comment, but I apologize if that's what happened.

Are you having a bad day?

Peace.

17. It occurs to me that buying books and tchotchkes about the Tao...
is just as materialistic as buying more clothes or anything else, ha. OTOH, sometimes people need to hear parts of that message again. I was watching our local pledge drive tonight (heh) and he reminded me of a couple of things I needed to be reminded of. :D

26. OT: You spelled out "TCHOTCHKES" -- I've only heard that word...
Never had to spell it.

I liked Dyer's "The Power of Intention."

25. I interviewed him on my radio show in the 1970s. He had hair then, and a twinkle in his eyes.

"I'm OK, You're OK"

I still watch his PBS specials. Did you see the newest one -- scheduled for yesterday, August 6th? We're on travel in the Bay Area of California so all our TV viewing is topsy-turvy and catch-as-catch-can... We totally missed Jon Stewart last night.

28. Asshat.
I used to be into him and then I saw one of his PBS specials, where he was talking about how he never gets sick because of his complete belief we are 100% responsible for any ill health we get, and he refuses to let sickness into his mind. His wife is sitting there in the front row, and his is talking about how she does get sick, because she hasn't really "gotten" it yet, isn't evolved enough mentally to banish all illness from her life, like him.

Sooooo, what happens to Mr. "Sickness Is Always Only In Your Head"? He gets felled by a massive heart attack.

And I laugh my ass off.

I love how Mistress Fate sometimes just steps in and kicks someone in their nuts when they are getting a little too big for their britches. :D

The sad thing is, Dwyer is still spouting his crap, claiming his heart attack was simply a lapse in his concentration, if you will.

I do believe we have a great deal of control over our health, and I believe there are diseases and illnesses that will visit us regardless of how much we try to "think" them away.
