the phone here at work has been ringing off the hook aLL morning.. and it's the same guy, diaLing the same wrong number. and he's caLLing again, right now. it's been over 20 times now.

maybe a few times is ok, but after that, stop diaLing the same number. you're not going to get a new resuLt.

10. I'll bet he's reversing digits in the number.
For several years I had a a guy calling my apartment and asking for someone I'd never heard of. He would do this every so often for a few years (!). I finally asked him which number he was trying to reach, and sure enough, he'd scrambled the last four digits of the number so that I was dialing mine and not the correct one.

I'm always amazed how often people are in complete denial about doing this. At a former workplace I used to get calls from people trying to reach a particular insurance company. Their number was a digit or two off from our line. People would dial in and launch into a discussion of how they'd broken their arm or something, and then I'd give them the number for the insurance company. And then they'd say -- you knew this was coming, right? -- "But that's what I dialed!" :eyes:

Uh, no, they didn't, or they wouldn't have been talking to me. And some of them got rather snippy about it, too, as though we'd picked up our building and plopped it down on top of the insurance company's offices.

Ditech is wrong. People are NOT smart.

11. I was so mean to someone who was doing that.
I worked at an answering service, and answered the phone for lots of businesses. This same person kept calling for about an hour. They didn't want the business, but someone associated with the business. I told them there was no way to get that information to anyone because I was just the answering service.

After about the 100th call, I finally answered the phone by the name of one of our other accounts - "Wichita Falls Morticians and Embalming Service". They freaked out and didn't call back. They probably thought I was going to send the meat wagon for them.

The last two numbers of our phone number in Brooklyn were the reverse of a restaurant down the street. It got so bad that we decided to start taking reservations.

17. I get this at home.
My home phone # is very close to that of a local landscaping company, and people often transpose the numbers when they dial. But at least I don't get the same idiot calling over and over. Sheesh, buddy. Check the number! :banghead:

19. I get a *lot* of wrong numbers
But there doesn't seem to any consistency in the mistakes. Some people think I'm an autoparts store, some an organic grocery, and most recently some lady who insisted I was a clinical laboratory. She got downright nasty when I told her that she'd called a private residence, as if she thought I really was working for a laboratory and was lying to her.

I finally hung up on her and took the phone off the hook. I probably also missed a few calls asking me if I carried swiss chard or a fuel pump for a '98 Chevy.

26. our 800 number is sometimes advertised
Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 10:27 AM by gmoney
My biz has an 800 number that we don't really promote (a convenience for customers) but apparently one of these credit consolidation ads has a number that's similar because when one of the ads runs, we'll get a rash of calls for a short while, then they'll stop. I try to ask, but these morans can never tell me the number they INTENDED to dial. I wonder if the other number doesn't substitute letters for numbers and people dial "zero" instead of 6 for the letter "o"

Our main number is similar to the local cable company, and people will launch right in. I'm tempted to adopt an automated sounding voice saying "if you had dialed the cable company, you would have been kept on hold for 30 minutes prior to speaking with a human."

27. Eat more fiber.
That was my response to the woman who wouldn't believe me when I said she'd dialed the wrong number and no I wasn't going to come over to unblock her toilet. At my old address I got calls for the plumber so frequently that I had his #s memorized.
